I'm sure Meaty Mick is doing the best he can under difficult circumstances but does anyone else think that it's taking DeGale a fxxking long time to get a world title crack ? Good job he had youth on his side after losing to George. James turns 28 next month and really should crack on this year. I guess by aiming for mandatory challenger status he is looking to avoid the curse of signing an options contract. I don't think he's really improving much, but I say that as an armchair fan. Hope he gets the chance to fight for a major title this year, he seems to have been on the cusp of it for a long, long time.

I think too much is made of age in boxing myself. I think it's more about the wear and tear on the body vs the digits. Obviously if you're talking 40 plus then it's a bit different admittedly.

Fair point. I wasn't saying he was too old or anything like that, it just seems he has been around for ages at this level. A bit like Kell Brook in that respect.

Yep, but in doing so he has lost almost all of his support, nearly 6 years on from the Olympics, people aren't interested any more.

But Channel 5 will probably pay less for the show than Sky and of those million, how many are watching because there's nothing else on, or aren't really paying attention to the TV and most importantly, how many would buy a ticket to watch him fight?

Is it people aren't interested any more because he isn't headlining big fights and is seemingly quite a distance from a world title 6 years on from the Olympics?

6 years and he and Gavin are still fighting domestic/European fighters in relatively small hall shows is pretty crap.

That's probably why, there's a new load of Olympians from a home Olympics that everyone would rather watch, even though I'd be surprised if some of them come close to what DeGale's achieved up to now. Gavin has the same problem, although his is more down to personal issues, lack of dedication and poor preparation setting him back a year, rather than wanting big paydays for every fight, while having little support to speak of. DeGale's turned into a TV headliner, bit like Chisora, people will watch on the box, but unless it's a big fight, they won't buy tickets.

Going to be another nothing fight then. I recall the pre fight presser for his last fight being really awkward between him and Mick.

Bit of bad luck for James ATM I know they offered this fight to Periban and to Badou Jack for this date which was a step in the right direction.

For me it wouldn't do James much harm facing Jack on the Mayweather Khan bill get him good exposure.

Shame he hasn't progressed as quick as I would have expected after winning the Euro title. Getting that fight was promotional genius by FW !! God knows what happened after.

Noticed this is the same date at Burns Crawford so will be watching that card instead.

3 cards on the same night, Burns, Butler and DeGale, anyone who has Sky isn't going to be watching DeGale, I swear promoters don't think sometimes, why not have the show a week later when there's no other shows on, they did the same last year with Fury-Cunningham, Cleverly-Krasniqi and Rose-Alcine.

I am beginning to feel genuinely sorry for James; he's a good, talented fighter, with plenty of achievements to his name and right on the cusp of world title shot but the way he is slipping right off the radar is very disappointing.

Luke Campbell and Joshua are already getting the more attention and getting the fans (both hardcore and casual) turning out in big numbers. They're younger, more current and on the move.

Meanwhile, James looks like he's going to be the support act for Lee Haskins...which, with due respect to Lee, is not where James should actually be right now. Bristol is not exactly Sleepy Hollow when it comes to boxing.....but neither is it the right place for a world-ranked London fighter who has already topped the bill at the O2.

I wish James well and I suspect that it will be his old nemesis - George Groves - who will ultimately reignite a career that seems to be failing to capture the public's imagination. These two need each other more than they care to realise.

DeGale needs Groves more than Groves needs DeGale, his problem is that he can't sell a ticket and his purse demands seem to be unrealistic for the fights he's in.

More doors will open for Degale if he can get that WBC belt and then get another big domestic fight. Looks like another poor undercard but i don't think i have ever seen a strong undercard on channel 5 yet, any chance Eubank Jr can get a fight on this show?

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has been made WBC #1 at 168lbs, despite the fact they just ordered a final eliminator between DeGale and Jack.

Eubank jnr has left Hennessey so he won't be on that show.......

He didn't even make weight in his sole fight at 168, he was nearer 175 if I remember, and he didn't win the damn thing anyway.
