Why are the UK promoters doing this?

I pretty much watch every boxing event live on TV. I'm lucky to be able to afford SKY Sports and allegedly. I'd love to be able to watch a live British fight every weekend in the year if possible, so if frustrates me when the top 3 promoters in the country put their shows on head to head. For example the 1st March:

Matchroom - Ricky Burns Vs. Terence Crawford (SKY Sports)
Queensberry - Paul Butler Vs. Liriano (allegedly)
Hennessy - James DeGale Vs. TBA (Channel 5)

Why are they doing this? Surely there is enough free weekends in the year to make sure promotions don't clash. Are they doing this deliberately to eat away at each others viewing figures?

Don't get me wrong I can watch 1 whilst recording the other 2 but not everyone has that option. Not only that if I watch all 3 shows it's going to take me about 12 to 14 hours to do so. Due to family and work commitments that's not easy to do, and means I'll have to go days trying to avoid spoilers.

It's great to see so much boxing on TV but I'd rather have them on one week after another, rather than all of them on the same night.

Venue availability will have something to do with it. TV dates, less so for FW.

Don't let expe hear you say that. Area title fights have no place on TV according to him.

Yes and viewing figures dropped off so sky stopped it and most of the blame must be laid at promotors feet simply because of some terrible matchmaking on the undercard

I seem to remember some atrocious main events with equally bad undercards too. There were some excellent Friday night maine vents tho, I think both Fury v McDermott matches were Friday night ones.

I certainly wouldn't have a problem with some of the Sky shows moving to Friday nights. Would attendance figures be at a risk of dropping? Do people tend to be less willing to go to a bill if it's a Friday because it's a weekday? I don't have a conventional Monday to Friday job so can't imagine there would be an issue there but think it may be because it's been years now since I'v had a Monday to Friday job.

does anyone remember the ITV fight night(i think) of the 80's that was shown up north that would have some great area fights

Fwank announced a big show at the Echo arena in Liverpool in mid-March. Matchroom announced one for the next weekend, same big venue. Absolutely ridiculous. Fwank decided to move venue and date, and now has his Aintree one on 1st March.

I'm not Fwanks biggest fan but - from the outside looking in - it seemed a big willy contest was going on there.

Wonder if this sort of thing reflects the approach to TV dates ?

Its Big Mick i feel for,he can barely get a show on Channel 5 for love nor money these days but when he does it clashes with the 2 biggest shows of the year so far, surely he could have got another date :o

This was a good programme - Presented by Gary Newbon on a Tuesday night.

Going back to the question this multiple booking does not make sense.

I can't believe that these were the only dates available and agree with the poster that this appears to be some kind of pissing contest.

Not when they're 3rd top of the bill and there's only 20 TV dates a year, 6 of which are prizefighters. I don't have a problem with them down the bill, or at least on small hall shows on TV, rather than in a big arena show topped by a European title.

It does seem to happen a lot that, Hearn seems to like to schedule his shows at the same time as other promoters, then blames it on Sky only giving certain TV dates. What the fornicate else are Sky Sports going to show on a Saturday night apart from Barcelona beating Real Murcia 6-0 or some shit Tennis or Golf tournament.

Some of it is venues and TV dates, but why Hennessey would choose to schedule it on the same night as 2 big shows on other channels is beyond me, Channel 5 show shite 24/7 and there's never anything on there on a Saturday night, the venue's a leisure centre, surely he could have booked it for the 8th March when there's no other shows, or the 22nd.

Understand your thought but Paul Butler & Degale are in showcase fights I'm not that concerned I'm missing those fights.Burns-Crawford is the only one that is of significance

Channel 5 will give mick the dates not the other way round simple as that mick can only work with the dates that channel 5 give him

Probably true but then Channel 5 cant moan about viewers then when they show fvck all intresting 99% of the time

You,d think they,d be trying to help Mick out rather than hinder him then threating to pull the plug on boxing alltogether

I can see your point. Burns Vs. Crawford is the biggest fight on British TV that night and will be the one I tune into live. However I also want to see Ronnie Heffron Vs. John Thain, Thomas Stalker making his Queensberry debut plus with DeGale having an world title eliminator soon I'd like to see if he starts to raise his game.

Not everyone's cup of tea I know however if it's boxing, I'll watch it.

the bbbc should have a 52 week schedule and try and get shows on every week on tv! whether it be sky sports allegedly or terrestrial tv!

I'm going the same way, don't have Sky+ so I can't record, I wouldn't mind watching Haskins, but Burns is the fight I want to see most, so I will watch that, but the Liverpool show as a whole is better than Glasgow right now, so I'd rather watch that as I like watching Butler, going to need to find a way of somehow recording streams I'm not watching at the time and avoid coming on here.

If there was some way that could be done, I'd be behind it.

There's a well known saying in business. If you're gonna open a shop open next to someone with the same shop and take their business don't take them over.
