Shrewsbury boxer Roddy Doran tested positive for the banned substance Clenbuterol after his bid to win a WBF title ended in defeat.
The 31-year-old now faces a crunch hearing in Cardiff tomorrow where he will learn of his punishment from the British Boxing Board of Control.
Doran today protested his innocence, claiming the substance was aimed at clearing a chest infection a week before the biggest fight of his life when he fought Damon Hague for the WBF super-middleweight title in Nottingham on March 12.
He said: "A week before I fought Hague I came down with a chest infection. In hindsight I should have withdrawn from the fight there and then but it was a chance to fulfil my dream of becoming champion so I was desperate to fight.
"I was advised by my brother Shaun to take some antibiotics and they contained something I shouldn't have been taking. It was a totally innocent and genuine mistake."
Doran's manager Dave Bradley, who will support him at tomorrow's hearing, said the drug was not performance-enhancing.
"It was probably the worst performance of his career which shows that it wasn't a stimulant of any type," he said.
