Re: Cus D'Amato ~ "Sonny Liston Should Have Been DQ'd"

Everybody on the east coast knew this.
I don't think Patterson would've beaten Liston if they fought 100 times. Liston was just all wrong for Patterson. These are some quotes that you've posted though that I actually can believe were said, it's not shocking to think that a trainer would have his fighters back in a situation like that.Il Duce wrote:Thursday - July 25, 1963
'Sonny Liston Should Have Been Disqualified For Illegal Blows'
Cus D'Amato, the former Trainer for Floyd Patterson said that Heavyweight Champion -
Sonny Liston should have been Disqualified on Monday Night in his bout with Floyd Patterson.
Cus D'Amato >
"I don't blame the Referee - Harry Krause, as he was blocked from view. He couldn't see the
body blow to Floyd's kidneys after the 1st-Knockdown."
"Liston was illegally holding Floyd with his left hand, and hit him in the kidneys with '2' of the
most vicious right hands that I have ever seen. Those were 'illegal punches'. Liston also held
with his right-hand, and hit Floyd with 'illegal punches' with his left hand."
"I'm going to file a grievance with the Nevada Boxing Commission and have the bout ruled
a 'No Contest' or have Liston 'Disqualified'. Sonny Liston did not play fair, and the Championship
should be ruled vacant."
"There should be a rematch. That is what I will ask for."
"You know, Floyd was not hurt at all after the 1st-Knockdown. Liston hit him about '7-Times', and
Floyd went down and got right back up. And Floyd hit Sonny with a good right hand, it stopped Sonny
in his tracks. Without those 'illegal blows', Floyd would have made it out of the 1st-Round and would
have taken Liston out later in the bout."
