'Sonny Liston Should Have Been Disqualified For Illegal Blows'

Cus D'Amato, the former Trainer for Floyd Patterson said that Heavyweight Champion -
Sonny Liston should have been Disqualified on Monday Night in his bout with Floyd Patterson.

Cus D'Amato >

"I don't blame the Referee - Harry Krause, as he was blocked from view. He couldn't see the
body blow to Floyd's kidneys after the 1st-Knockdown."

"Liston was illegally holding Floyd with his left hand, and hit him in the kidneys with '2' of the
most vicious right hands that I have ever seen. Those were 'illegal punches'. Liston also held
with his right-hand, and hit Floyd with 'illegal punches' with his left hand."

"I'm going to file a grievance with the Nevada Boxing Commission and have the bout ruled
a 'No Contest' or have Liston 'Disqualified'. Sonny Liston did not play fair, and the Championship
should be ruled vacant."

"There should be a rematch. That is what I will ask for."

"You know, Floyd was not hurt at all after the 1st-Knockdown. Liston hit him about '7-Times', and
Floyd went down and got right back up. And Floyd hit Sonny with a good right hand, it stopped Sonny
in his tracks. Without those 'illegal blows', Floyd would have made it out of the 1st-Round and would
have taken Liston out later in the bout."
I don't think Patterson would've beaten Liston if they fought 100 times. Liston was just all wrong for Patterson. These are some quotes that you've posted though that I actually can believe were said, it's not shocking to think that a trainer would have his fighters back in a situation like that.

At worst Liston would've only gotten warnings from the referee even if he were caught landing those kidney punches. He wouldn't have been DQ'ed.

Liston did hit Patterson with some illegal kidney punches. No way he should have been disqualified; he probably should have got a warning though. For whatever reason people don't seem interested in kidney punches or rabbit punches like they do about low blows. Hardly anyone seems to care about the kidney punches that Louis landed on Schmeling either.

There were a few rabbit punches thrown by Liston as well, though they did not seem intentional.
