A fighter in the "avoided because they were too good" category, 1940/50s southpaw middleweight "Chocolate Kid" Bert Lydell. Said to be been avoided by Sugar Ray Robinson.

Five of his points defeats were by split decision, these included a SD loss to Jake LaMotta, Harold Johnson and Aaron Wade.

Lost to great fighters such as Archie Moore, Holman Williams, Charley Burley but also beat Burley and Williams in the rematches and also beat Cocoa Kid, Charley Doc Williams and Billy Smith.

Also beat top prospect Jackie Darthard who unfortunately died in the injuries sustained in the fight. Darthard was only 18 but shot into the top 10 rankings and was on a 32 fight unbeaten run, 31 wins with 1 draw, the draw being against Lytell in their first fight.
