Martin Murray

Martin Murray and Hatton Promotions now have a big decision to make and the option to fight either Felix Sturm in a re-match in Germany or take a career high payday and box Gennady Golovkin in Monte Carlo.

What would be the best option for Murray. Personally I think the re-match with Sturm has to be the best option as the career high pay days will come further down the line. Also if he can secure the IBF belt by beating Sturm a unification fight with Gennady Golovkin would be massive.

Knowing Murray, he will take the harder rout Golovkin, he will have to fight Storm in Germany, could get robbed anyway, won't stop Storm, no one will expect him to beat Golovkin, win, win situation, plus it will be in America, I can see him going the distance.

He should take the fight that offers the most money.

It depends on the difference in the money on offer really. If he's getting relative peanuts for the Sturm rematch and serious money to fight Golovkin then it has to be Golovkin, if the offers are closer then Sturm might prove the better option.

I honestly don't think we learnt anything from the Sturm win over Barker. It lasted such a short time and Barker's injury so badly hindered him that it's almost facile to read much into it. In my opinion Sturm has always been just shy of real elite level and he is well on the slide. I thought he nicked the first fight but if Murray believes he can win and sets a high pace I cannae see Sturm staying with him. Yes he has a beautiful jab, is superbly conditioned and technically very good but he doesn't like being asked to stay with a high pace and doesn't possess one punch power. I'd make Murray the favourite and then he has the option of making some serious cash vs Golovkin in a unification or a lucrative, easier option in Ireland vs Lee or London vs Saunders.

Golovkin is a beast and he's on a roll. A Martinez, Quillen, N'Dam N'Jikam type (on that sliding scale) have the ability to out slick him and take him deep but I'm not sure he's quite the right risk/reward for Murray at the moment.

The division is weak so it's feasible for Murray to pick up a title and then try and make hay in a big unification or domestic scrap. :TU:

Anzi,
Martin cannot fight in America.
The choice is totally down to team Murray.
The Promotion Co has two offers on the table so he just needs to make his mind up.

Murray could struggle again to get a visa to enter the US hence why the proposed fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr fell through. I think any fight with Gennady Golovkin would be in Monte Carlo.

The fight with the most money might not necessarily be the best option here though Horse. He might stand a better chance of landing a world title against Sturm and then a massive pay day in a unification fight with Golovkin. If he takes arguably a tougher fight against GGG first for more money and loses would the offer of a Sturm fight still be possible. Saying that he could take the re-match with Sturm first and get robbed in Germany so yes maybe your right - difficult decision for him and his team.

I don't think the Sturm fight against Barker told us anything we didn't already know about Sturm. I thought a draw was a fair result in the Murray/Sturm first fight. The thing with Sturm is he does nothing for 2 minutes of each round and he's very good at timing the rounds and coming on very strong in the last minute of each round to nick the rounds. I think Murray could well look to capitalise on that and beat the man at his own game so to speak.

Sam Soliman will likely be his mandatory if he beats Sturm. That's worth considering.

Murray might also lose fair and square against Sturm in the rematch.

Golovkin looks very good, but he is still relatively unproven, and it is possible that he isn't actually a better fighter than Sturm.

A loss to Golovkin is probably less damaging than a loss to Sturm. I think Golovkin might be the best option, but it depends on how much money is on offer for both fights.

He can beat Sturm. He can't beat Golovkin. Therefore, Sturm is the better option.

Oh yes mate, previous convictions, could be Golovkin fight will be held in Europe ? That changes it slightly, he deserves the shot either way.

What makes you say Murray can't beat Golovkin - Anyone can be beaten. Golovkin has hardly fought the best of the best in his division. Yeah he's a powerful and is on a good run with a decent knockout ratio but he's not held his own against a Sturm or Martinez yet (Some argue Murray won both contests) He's not fought any notable fighter at middleweight yet not even contested any of the top fellas in that division - The highest rated boxer he's fought is Matthew Macklin ffs :TU:

Who also did well against Sturm and Martinez; Murray is a very strong boxer but is basic with a high guard, I don't think Martin hits as hard as Curtis Stevens. Golovkin is hitting horribly hard and does it with either hand and with any punch; Murray would do well to last 12 rounds, I don't think he'd win more than 3.

Golovkin has a better than 'decent knockout rate', it's the current highest of any World champion and he's KO'd his last 16 opponents over the past 6 years.

I don't think I am alone in saying that Golovkin is currently the best middleweight in the world. Yes, people want him to prove that by fighting one of the current 'names' in the division - Martinez, Murray, Geale, Strum but he has been avoided like the plague. IMO he KO's them all. His time will come, hopefully in his next fight he gets Murray or Geale.

Murray is a decent size for a MW and if he does fight GGG, I can see him using the same defence that he used against Sergio, peek-a-boo style, absorbing, moving etc. The problem is GGG cuts off the ring so good and hunts his man that it would take an extremely talented boxer to take him the distance right now.

I'd bet that Murray goes for the Sturm fight. It's a winnable fight that he can get himself up for. Listening to him lately, he sounds in a bit of a bad place and deep down, he'll know GGG would probably KO him. He even mentioned similar when he did the Sky commentary for the GGG fight, 'I'd need to take a baseball bat in there with me to stop him' he said.

I heard he rejected golovkin and thinks he is worth millions per fight , I follow him on twitter and further too rumours he looks like he is drinking regular and that showed in his last fight .
All I'm hearing is bad things about him and the people about him

if that is true he is wasting his talent but i think macklin deserves the sturm match and not Murray

Golovkin would put a serious beating on Murray. He hits like a mule and his chin is rock solid. Noone has completely destroyed Macklin like Golovkin did and I wasnt even on the Golovkin bandwagon!

They've surely got to be hugely tempted by Sturm....especially as Martin ran him so close last time and in Felix's backyard. Martin got very close in that fight and the money will be even better for the rematch. I also think that the Murray camp will be well aware that Felix got a lucky break by facing a version Darren Barker who was held together with Elastoplast.

Right now; I don't think anyone wants to touch GGG with a barge-pole unless it is a fringe-contender who has nothing to lose and comes cheaply or someone outside the division looking for a super-fight. Geale might be the exception to this rule and Martin would be well-advised to let Daniel to go first and see what he can do.

I think that, in his pomp, Martinez could have outboxed Golovkin and had the speed and unorthodox shots to rattle him. Problem is that Martinez is beginning to look his age a bit and he'd have to be offered a massive wedge to take on Golovkin. I honestly think Golovkin's best fight in the division will be Quillen, who has the style and is fresh enough to be his toughest fight

I agree, it's going to take someone who moves well or Andre Ward to beat Golovkin, at his best Martinez would have won easily, but those days are gone.

Well looks like any proposed fight with Sturm or GGG is off for now as Murray has severed all ties with Hatton Promotions.

Everyone will be interested.
Just a question of Team Murray making the right choices.
There's clearly an under current here regarding Martin's team around him.
Bit of a dig from Hatton about the new team from 2013 onwards.
Didn't realise he'd changed
