If not Mayweather, what's next for Khan?

At it stands it looks as though Khan will not be fighting Mayweather in May. What happens next?

Either he tries to stay busy in the hope of landing a September bout with Floyd, or he moves on and tries to establish himself as a Welterweight.

By the time Khan fights again it will have been almost two years since he fought against top opposition.

His opponents since joining Virgil Hunter have been Molina (unranked and hasn't fought since) and Diaz (ranked 40 at Welter, lost a UD to Porter after the Khan fight).

Can he get away with yet another lowly ranked opponent? I am inclined to believe that Khan is now finished at Light Welter given his last fight was at a 143 lb catch weight.

The top 20 Welters per Boxrec are below. Although all of the top ten would make for interesting viewing, I’m not I’d pick Khan against any of them at this stage of his career, other than Malignaggi, but he’s already been there so that rules that one out.

With Bradley-Pacquiao, Porter-Alexander and Maidana all seemingly tied up, in the top ten that leaves the likes of Marquez, Brook, Guerrero & Thurman, but I can’t see Khan taking on any of those as a tune up.

Looking on to those in positions of 11-20, the biggest name opponents are Broner, Gavin, Rios, Karass and Collazo. I’d happily see Khan in against any of those but again I think the risk outweighs the reward, and Gavin isn’t an established enough name Stateside.

I think the most likely opponent for Khan in the top 20 is probably the likes of Bundu or Bailey.

Other thoughts?

1 Timothy Bradley
2 Juan Manuel Marquez
3 Manny Pacquiao
4 Marcos Rene Maidana
5 Kell Brook
6 Robert Guerrero
7 Shawn Porter
8 Keith Thurman
9 Devon Alexander
10 Paul Malignaggi
11 Leonard Bundu
12 Adrien Broner
13 Chris van Heerden
14 Luis Carlos Abregu
15 Randall Bailey
16 Frankie Gavin
17 Ray Robinson
18 Brandon Rios
19 Jesus Soto Karass
20 Luis Collazo

I would like to see Amir V Broner or Rios as he could look great against him with his speed.
He should avoid Guerroro as he is very good

Broner and then Brook later in the year would be ideal for me.

Collazo must be a better fighter than he is ranked.

If Eddie's big money offer still stands, he needs to get home and fight Brook.

I remember watching the ringside with those guys on it, both arguing about the sparring, who got the better of who etc..

It has the potential to have a 'Froch v Groves' type build up all over again!!

(well maybe not but it'll split the forum in half for sure)

Pretty obvious outcome to me, Kell has power, Amir has no chin, he's going to time one eventually and when he does the fight's over.

Maidana has real power and Khan did well against him; to be a top level fighter and earn big money for years a boxer needs more than a strong punch. I think what Khan has is underrated and glossed over. If he were so crap he'd not have gone anywhere, Brook is a very good fighter but weren't at the Olympics at 17 and is still waiting for a title shot while Khan is one or 2 fights from being finished with being punched for a living and be a multi millionaire.

I'd love a rematch of Khan and Maidana for them to take the moral high ground and tell that wanker Floyd to take his lure of PPV filthy lucre to the bookies and hopefully lose the lot.
Either that or a Brook fight

Khan is a world class operator but still has a lot of flaws,

Kell has power but also has weight issues that are getting worse

would be a great fight but I think the question marks are more around Kell than Amir as Amir has boxed at a much better level by far

He should have been stopped against Maidana, anyone but Joe Cortez would have stopped the fight and at the time Maidana was very crude, lots of wild swings, Brook is much more precise and counterpunches well on the front foot, Khan may well outbox him, but he outboxed Garcia early on, but once he landed the left hook, the fight was as good as over.

Garcia is a proven far better fighter than Brook and beat the big new flying machine in Lucas; Brook is very powerful but it seems to take him 4 months to make the welter limit; it remains to be seen how he'll cope when someone whacks him back - there are plenty of very good boxers who look a sure thing and come unstuck.

Maidana was lucky not to have been stopped in the front round v Khan, he was dropped like a sack of spuds and in real pain - he showed real heart to get through as did Khan later in the bout.

That anyone but Joe Cortez line is a rubbish, Khan was on his bike but finished the 12th firing back at a Maidana who ? 'should've' stopped Khan but he was incapable as a fighter.

Khan spent most of the 10th round staggering around the ring jelly legged, no one could have complained if Cortez stepped in and stopped the fight and if Maidana picked his punches a bit better he should have finished him off anyway.

Kell just wants a big payday without having to fight a top welter. All this "I wanna be a world champion" bollocks and turning down Bradley and co because of options, etc. It just shows that all these eliminators Kell has been in will of been a waste of time. Nothing new though.

His best chance has to be as soon as Floyd-Maidana is announced.

Can't see Khan wanting to fight Kell Brook anytime soon.

Mayweather v Maidana
Khan v Broner

that would be a half decent PPV worth 15 quid of anyone's money

I second this.

He stood in front of Garcia and was caught by a monster left hook.

That was no reason to leave Freddy Roach.

If he didn't blame Roach then that would have meant Khan admitting it was his fault he was knocked out and there's no chance of that. How many trainers has he had now? Started with Harrison, Dean Powell took over for a couple of fights, Rubio, Roach, Hunter, are there any more?

'Hey guys I didn't say Freddie Roach is a bad trainer, he's one of the best out there and took my career to a high winning two world titles,' Khan said.
'I blame myself for the losses in my career. Not blaming Freddie Roach or anyone. I just needed a change.' Amir Khan.

Khan has had a brilliant career so far, can he win the world title again ? Yes with the right fights, he is still a top class operator, maybe a bit damaged, but still in good working order, not sure it is working yet with his new trainer, but maybe they need time to gel, sometimes, after fighters have a couple of defeats, they need a change,to try new training methods and get the confidence back, sometimes people make more of it then it is.
