Thanks Zojo....read without prejudice the best thing this article articulates, is that this version of the FBI was the closest thing to the Keystone cops we could have ever hoped for.
And we paid them a lot of money to produce such comedy.
Our friend Il Duce will find a way for this old, old, old, info to somehow shore up his nonsense.
If you believe that we can not hide our body language, there is a story in the first fight that can not be misread. Regardless of any and all possible scandalous scenarios, a new champion simply took an old champion out. Both of them fully meaning business. Plain and Simple.
Now our illustrious FBI director may have had some designs on these fascinating male specimens. And what better way to excuse his sordid "interest" than by having his "boys" look into such scandalous things. Who knows, if J Edgar had some of the "right stuff" on these fellas, well....he might be able to arrange a "one on one "interrogation" if he found himself so interested. (All in the best interest in the country, mind you)
Though to admit this would be to admit that he was not overly prejudicial or bias with his "male interests" lol.

I am sorry that I didn't comment on the article and just pasted the link. It was late and I was heading to bed when I found this.
my own two cents are similar to your's. If the only evidence is that "the odds dramatically changed and people lost money betting on the fight", then...well....that is not a smoking gun. Not sure why the FBI felt the need to investigate in the first place.

The 'money' wasn't made with Betting. As there was 'never' any big money laid down on fights.
The 'money' was made on the Closed Circuit revenue and rematch, and rights to Cassius Clay's next '2' Title Defenses.
An 'associate' in the Sonny Liston Camp >
"We can make triple the money with the rematch and Clay's next '2' Title defenses, than if Sonny wins and
fights thru 1966."
"We have to move Sonny out of the way. He's bad news."
You always talk as if you were a fly on the wall. Sort of the way Jay Leno was hiding behind the door when the "powers that be" were deciding the fate of who would host the Tonight Show in post Carson Era.
Shall we send the federal marshalls out now? Or do you plan to turn yourself in?

You sound a little bit like Granberry here......a well medicated version. lol.
I suppose I could cut and paste your contribution on this subject here.
I mean if you shared it here....I "KNOW" it right?

I didn't realize that Ali was so marketable back then.
I assumed that if there was a drastic change in the betting odds it could have been due to:
- rumors that Sonny wasn't in fight'n shape and word of a shoulder injury could be afoot.
- Ali freaking out Liston during the leadup to the fight with his antics
