I am sure this post will attract some "making excuses" responses ect however I am a fan of Ricky Burns I think he is a genuine guy and has done very well in achieving a World title at 2 weights and has some often underated boxing skills and a true heart and pride needed by a pro fighter.

But I cant help feel that something was missing in the last couple maybe even three fights and last night he seemed almost excepting of the fact he would get beat ?! I know its easy to say when your not taking the shots and I think Crawford has great potential and skills but was it just me or was Ricky just a little flat in the build up and aftermath.

I know the jaw will have played a part and no matter how many times they say it didnt bother him its expected due to the nature of the injury how much is the court case with Bunny a factor ?

I think I read somewhere that he stood to lose everything if he lost to Bunny, How if true did that play a part ?

Just doesnt seem the same Ricky since the switch ?

Thoughts ?

I think that Ricky and his trainer got the absolute maximum out of him over the last few years. Not many of us, whatever we do in life, can say that we put absolutely everything into what we did. Ricky did.

He trained as hard as he possibly could, he listened to all the good advice he got, he sparred with who he was told to spar with and outside the ring he lived the life that a professional boxer should live. I haven't heard anyone within boxing, including opponents, who have ever said anything bad about him. He's one of those unique characters who EVERYBODY likes. On the court case against him I think that FW is simply trying to defend his position and I would encourage him, that should he win his case, he accepts that he was right, but then returns any money he's awarded back to Ricky. And to be honest I think FW will do that because I'm certain he likes Ricky as well. If FW was not to do this the boxing world would turn against him utterly and completely.

But , back to Ricky. He is an intelligent boxer, he reads the fight, he jabs well, was always tall at the weight which helped, concentrated all the time on the job in hand, and forced opponents to fight for every second of every round. On the down side, he doesn't have a world class punch, he simply can't hook for some reason ( he seems to be unable to get his body into the right position), he can't fight with his back to the ropes and he can't throw an uppercut.

Finally, I don't think he'll retire. Even if it means coming back down to try for the Lonsdale belt I think that's what he'll do.

I blame George Groves.

Deffo wasn't a case of him looking like his true level against someone able to make their class tell against his obvious physical advantages (c.f. first eight rounds of Gonzalez fight, all the Beltran fight (oh, but of course, he got his jaw broken in what, the first ten seconds, was it? It gets earlier & earlier every time someone brings it up)). Not at all. Oh no.

Though, to give this thread a second's more consideration than it deserves...

What's missing from most's reading of the fight is that Burns simply cannot fight on the inside. He's a huge fvcking lightweight but get close & he gets the earmuffs on & stands there until he can clinch. He's done it forever, too--Martinez clobbered him a couple times when he did it, Gonzalez used his head as a speedbag when he went into that mode & Beltran had a fvcking field day because of it.

In other words, he's looked like that every single time his physical advantages don't allow him to cling on inside.

Crawford was the better fighter inside & out last night & the shock of the partisan in acknowledging this is the reason that a lot of them are bleating about the jaw or "something being missing" this morning.

I would be amazed if Fwank wins and then gives it all back to Ricky! And boxing won't bat an eyelid.

Boxers are always the last to know when it's over.
I would feel more comfortable if Ricky hung them up. I thought that before this fight and if anything last nights effort underlined it.
Ricky can be proud of what he achieved but I just think he could even struggle at a lower level so why ruin his Scottish legacy ?

100% agree. Ricky was man enough to acknowledge that he was beaten by the better man last night. That's all there is to it.
