I thought that yesterdays Ringside episode was really good and it went into a detailed history of Irish boxing. However it does frustrate me that certain fighters were being mentioned as Irish greats when others never got a mention. Obviously the 10-12 World champions that have hailed from Ireland all should be given special recognition but they always seem to mention the same British, Commonwealth champions and leave out the same people that have achieved similar things.
For example no mention of:
Hugh Russell
Billy Spider Kelly
Paddy Maguire
Gordon Ferris
Darren Corbett
Noel Magee
Mark Winters
Danny McAlinden
Tommy Waite
John Lowey

I understand that it is impossible to mention all of the champions however I have read countless books and articles about Irish boxing and it is the same names that get left out.

Didn't enjoy it but can understand it would have been great viewing for some.

I was surprised with quite a lot happening in the boxing world that it was just all about the Irish history and barely touched upon much else.

Hugh Russell was surely worth a mention. He is one of the very few domestic fighters to win a British title at one weight (bantam) and then a second a weight DOWN (fly).
He also picked up Olympic bronze.

It was ok. But not sure why they chose to do it.ringside is usually a more topical programme. Not like there was a specific Irish show. Maybe Adam and Johnny just wanted a jolly.

Enjoyable show - McGuigan is an engaging character thats for sure.

I'm watching ringside from last night, he has few weaknesses - would do Quigg, no doubt, always thought it

Some of the best Irish fighters never even turned pro: think of Maxie McCullagh, Jim McCourt, Fred Tiedt, Ollie Byrne, Kieran Joyce, Phil Sutcliffe and particularly Mick Dowling, a thrilling, aggressive bantamweight who licked Jim Watt and turned down a professional offer from Gil Clancy.

REFEREE ALMOST ACCUSED OF MURDER

On 5 October 1982, Belfast’s Hugh Russell and Davy Larmour clashed at the Ulster Hall for the Irish bantamweight title. The fight, which was also a final eliminator for the British title, was a truly bloody affair that went the full fifteen rounds. Russell was awarded the narrowest of decisions by referee Mike Jacobs in a ring that resembled a butchers apron. On returning to London, Jacobs left his white shirt in to be dry-cleaned. However, when he returned to collect it he was handed an official letter from the girl in the shop asking him to report to the local police station. Once there, Jacobs was taken into a room and asked by CID how his shirt had come to be covered in so much blood? A simple explanation that he had refereed a boxing match in Belfast duly resolved the matter with the police. It seemed that the owner of the dry-cleaners had become suspicious when he was handed in the shirt and phoned police as he was convinced that Jacobs had been involved in a bloody murder.

How about Irish-American fighters based out in the States? Some good names over the years.
