who`s the most gutless,mentally weak and general waste of time you`ve ever seen in a ring that make you wonder why they ever became a professional,bearing in mind they must have some b*****s to actually get hit in the head for a living,but when the fur starts to fly they can`t handle it

I`ll start with audley Harrison (or Audrey Hepburn,as my dad called him),there must be others but I think he`s the king of wasters

There is really no such thing.

I'd imagine such guys wouldn't become professional boxers on account of all the, you know, punching and whatnot.

And I wouldn't call Audley Harrison "gutless". He didn't pan out the way some people hoped, but I don't think it had much to do with his being afraid or something. He just didn't have specific tools at that level of the pro game to be resilient. Hardly makes him a coward.

You were right with your assertion that "they must have some balls". You probably should have left it at that.

Victor Ortiz comes to mind. How many times has he quit?

Well the scale has to be tilted pretty weirdly to get anywhere with this hypothetical.

Because the real answer is the many many guys like me who tried it, and gained much respect for the mission,

so much so that they decided that only the best should be allowed to forge forward...allowing

themselves to be left behind. lol.


Because once we are hearing about their careers, they have already passed that threshold.

Now some got in, and at some point they "lost" it I suppose.


I always wondered why Mike Spinks stopped after his first loss. But he's a long long way from what this thread's hinting at.

I wondered why Naseem only went on to fight one more fight after he lost his first fight. But once again....a proven winner that just puzzled me as to why apply the brakes at that point in time.

Has little to do with any win loss ration IMHO.

Like Saad, I don't think there are any fighters who have been there done that, that deserve this sort of connecting of the dots.


Not if you've got a few wins and losses under your belt. Including amateurs.

"Gutless" is maybe a too harsh a word for what this guy means. But I think that we all know what he is getting at.

Maybe we could re-describe it as "fighters who aren't as willing to engage in brawls as others".

And yes, Audley is one of them.

When I saw the topic I thought more of "champions" who avoided top opposition (a.k.a. Sturm. Shumenov, C. John after Marquez)

Anybody that steps into a ring got guts. There is no such thing as a gutless fighter. If they go inside the ring, is because they think they could beat that guy or make serious money for a living.

Like me, I would not even fight the great Mike Tyson even if they pay me 50 million. I rather have my brains and my health in perfect way than to have all those millions and brained damaged.

Sharmba Mitchell against Tszyu and Bobby Czyz against Holyfield.

Those two couldnt keep their excuses straight and seeing Sharmba fake cry into his towel was just embarrassing.

Andre Dirrell is the only top fighter I've seen that I'm comfortable calling a pussy. Though, to be honest, even with him I think he had a panic attack and suffers from high anxiety.

Then you should use words that reflect that.

There's a huge gap between: "gutless" and: "most likely to quit". You can't really use the wrong words to describe something, then turn around and accuse someone of a lack of reading comprehension when they address what you actually said.

Any man who steps into a ring has guts, however, in my life time the man who probably fit the bill better than anyone else is without question Charlie Zelenoff.

King Levinsky was a top rated boxer until he stepped in the ring with Joe Louis, pleading with the referee to stop the slaughter

I'm not sure there is such a thing but if there is I'd say Tor Hamer. Can't really explain the guy.

There have been a few front runners that go to pieces when they get tired or get hit hard back; it may sound stupid but Mike Tyson had a bit of that about him at some stage of his career though at other times he really went for it. It's strange that someone can be very brave and game and then at another time look for a way out. A boxers psychology is surely complex. Johnny Nelson also showed great bravery and ability to stick it out and on other nights he just didn't have it in him. Geoff McCreash was a very good fighter who beat some good fighters and hard hitters, as an amateur he bailed out after a round with Joe Calzaghe.

Tyson just lacked the ability to adapt, very low ring IQ. That being said, when he had no options he resigned himself to wading in and taking a beating. And he almost always took it like a man with a couple of glaring exceptions.
