Thompson keeps IBO Title

CARL Thompson will keep his International Boxing Organisation title, despite being banned for six months.
But the Manchester veteran has been landed with a further £600 fine on top of the £1,000 penalty exacted by the British Boxing Board of Control.
Thompson was found guilty last month of having illegal gloves ahead of his fight with Sebastian Rothmann in February - in which he won the IBO title with a knockout.
The thumb attachments had been cut, but the dangerous gloves were spotted by referee Richie Davies before the first bell and were changed.
Thompson has since protested his innocence, saying he had no knowledge of the severed attachments.
The IBO accepted his explanation but suggested he should change "those employed by you and who may have contributed to this act."
Because Thompson actually fought with legal gloves, the IBO decided he could keep the belt.
But, like the BBBC, the IBO's championship committee found that "without any doubt" the gloves had been tampered with after being handed to Thompson's representatives.
In a letter to Thompson, IBO president Ed Levine said: "Although our committee does not believe that you had any know- ledge, nor did you give any instructions to anyone to cause this event, nevertheless, as you can understand, this is a serious violation which was occasioned by those under your employ."
Thompson's chief second Maurice Core, the former British light-heavyweight champion, has already had his licence renewal refused, although he will be allowed to re-apply once Thompson's ban is completed in September.
