I know amateur results mean little but I thought it might be interesting to post a few amateur losses of well known pros. Criteria is they were contenders or champ and the loss was brutal (KO) or they were beaten by another well known fighter.

I'll start it off.

Aaron Pryor outpointed Tommy Hearns in 1976 National Golden Gloves Champion (132 lbs)

Felix Savon stopped David Tua within 20 seconds in 1991

Al Evans knocked out Mike Tyson in 1982 U.S. Amateur Championships.

Tyrell Biggs outpointed Lennox Lewis in 1984 Olympics

Lennox Lewis stopped Riddick Bowe in 2nd round in 1986 World Amateur Boxing Championships


Anymore

Buster Mathis beat Joe Frazier in the 1964 Olympic trials and was picked to represent USA in Tokyo. Buster broke his hand and Smoking Joe went in his place.

I think Joe Frazier lost to Tony Doyle as an amateur, but not 100% positive.

I don't think that last one is correct. Lewis beat Bowe at the 1988 Olympics, but Alex Garcia and Michael Bentt represented the U.S. at the '86 World Championships.

Definitely sounds like he could've been. You never can tell if a Top level amateur will make a great Pro or not. Several do and several don't, but I'd say if you were THAT good of an amateur, it's certainly worth a shot to find out if you can make it as a Pro or not.

Sven Ottke made 21 successful title defenses at super middleweight and retired undefeated. As an amateur, Ottke also defeated these future champs:

* Chris Byrd 1992 USA vs. Germany
* Juan Carlos Gomez (1994)
* Antonio Tarver 1994 USA vs. Germany

Didn't Kostya Tszyu beat Vernon Forrest in the amateurs when he (Tszyu) was like two years younger, or am I remembering that wrong?

And while I'm on Forrest, he did beat Mosley in the amateurs(as well as pros, of course). Kelson Pinto beat Miguel Cotto.

I remembered thinking it was interesting that Pinto beat Cotto as an amateur and Cotto beat him with ease as a Professional.

Whereas Cotto beat Ricardo Torres as an amateur, and then had absolute hell with him in the Pros. He still won, but it was probably one of Miguel's hardest fought victories.

Does anyone know of any copies floating around of Alex Miroshnichenko's pro bouts? I'd love to see them. I know he went undefeated until he lost to Oleg Maskaev (in Maskaev's debut) ... and then he was rumored to have been killed by the Russian mob.

I saw only his fight against Bowe in OG 1988 semifinal.
