After S.T upset Trevor Berbick in '82 on CBS, his trainer claimed in the post fight interview that this fight was stopped "because Cooney couldn't hit S.T" while stating his case for a big bucks rematch.
Now that the fight is finally available to see with our own eyes, that particular claim has been put soundly to rest.

Duce, the sad thing is that neither Ball or Pulu would've given Cooney of 1978 much more trouble than Gordon, I'd think. For all the hype Lynn Ball got leading up to the Marty Monroe fight, he looked like a football player pretending to be a boxer and his punches were heavy but wide and dull- major disappointment when he finally hit the tv screen- and Pulu was a smallish and fragile heavy whose claim to fame was dancing around Shelburg a couple of times without getting caught. Cooney's management being overprotective in your eyes?

Any Gerry Cooney win is a good win.

To a point, yes, but I would've liked to see him pull that off against a Michael Dokes, or Greg Page in an 1981-1982 time span. 3% chance of that happening, realistically.

I think he could have beaten both Dokes and Page.

If Michael was coked up, and Greg overweight, then it could happen
.

which is about an 80% probability.

In 1981, Micheal wouldn't be as heavy on the stuff. And Page's weight woudn't be as bad, and his father would still be living, in the early part. Gerry couldn't deal with what both brought to the table in that short span of time. And Jones and Rappaport knew it. So they shied him away.

- In 1981, Greg Page struggled against George chaplin and soon after didn't look all that impressive against an aged Young - two fighters whom Cooney destroyed.
- Fairly close to the time frame you're suggesting, Dokes Drew with Ocasio and barely squeaked by Tex Cobb.
-Was there ever talk of him fighting either of those guys, and mention of Cooney's handler's shying away from them? Could you provide a source?

You got to go back to a lot of the magazines and interviews of that era. Many people questioned why Cooney didn't fight any true livebodies. If Page and Dokes were at their peaks, Cooney would've been in trouble, and many in his camp knew it, so they played to the era.

This doesn't answer the question of weather or not there was an offer on the table to fight specifically Dokes or Page and weather or not those two men were on the "avoid" list of Cooney's management. In either case, I'd give Gerry a fair chance of beating them both.

I think he has that small percentage of chance of beating him, like I stated before, but we'll agree to disagree on this one
!
