PAUL SMITH (Holder) v ROCKY FIELDING

Due to Rocky Fielding being unable to make Championship weight for the defence of the Commonwealth Boxing Council Super Middleweight Championship, the Board has decided to postpone the above Purse bid due on Wednesday, 9th April 2014.

The Stewards will consider the Championship at their next meeting.


Makes u think doesn't it. Imo just wat hearn and team fielding wanted.

Fielding can't be that scared of boxing Smith he's raiding the fridge to get out of the division, surely?

Good decision imo. No way does Fielding deserve to be rewarded with a title shot after coming in so heavy last time out.

Who's going to be made Smith's mandatory challenger now?

Brian Magee? Callum Smith? Frank Buglioni?

Why not? He's the English champion, there aren't going to be many ahead of him in the queue to be made mandatory.

Why would that stop him becoming mandatory?

I wouldn't have thought they'd fight each other, and I wouldn't have thought the board would bother making Callum a mandatory to his own brother.

Froch, Groves and DeGale are above that level. Anderson's been inactive for 17 months and is banned. Magee's been inactive for over 15 months and Buglioni and the rest are less deserving than Callum.

I don't see why Callum Smith shouldn't be made mandatory challenger.

Reinstating Fielding as the mandatory probably makes the most sense out of all the options.

Paul would vacate if his brother was made mandatory. I'm with you though, they should reinstate Fielding as he's the most worthy out of the rest.

It's not ideal, but given the situation Fielding is still the strongest candidate.

On a related note.... if a Smith is to fight King Arthur later this year, I would give Callum more chance of winning than Paul

Magee / Smith is a very good fight but how possible would it be for Smith to get an eliminator for Abraham.

Why make someone mandatory, who has no interest in the position and neither champion nor challenger would ever take the fight? Magee has always shown himself to be a level above domestic level, in fact Tsypko is the only fighter he's lost to who you wouldn't say was world class at the time, if he still wants to fight, then fighting Smith for the British title would be a good way to come back. In no circumstances should Fielding be reinstated, he was a light heavyweight for his last fight, until he proves he can make 12st, he should be considered as such.

Would the Board make Magee the mandatory after over a year of inactivity though?

I'd prefer Fielding stay as mandatory if the board don't have anyone else lined up. Someone needs to be the mandatory challenger.

Smith shouldn't be allowed to have an easy voluntary defence.

What's wrong with Smith having a voluntary? If he wins a voluntary he takes the belt outright, they turned down Tobias Webb, but for him to win the belt outright, which he has every right to want to do, he needs one defence, the only opponent that's deserving of a shot and would take the fight right now is Brian Magee. Froch, Groves and DeGale are at or close to world level, Callum would never fight him, Fielding has in effect moved up in weight, Buglioni's going down the international route and they wouldn't risk him fighting Smith right now, he's beaten Dodson twice, Blackledge was sparked by Fielding, the board wouldn't sanction Webb and I doubt they would sanction Kelvin Young or Lee Markham either.

Yes he can be the mandatory. Smith was 175lbs in his fight before fighting for the British title, it happens all of the time.

Smith does not deserve to win the belt outright by beating a weak opponent.

Smith's British title wins: Quigley, Dodson & Dodson.

Very weak wins for a British champion. It is degrading to the Lonsdale belt to allow Smith to win it outright without beating anyone solid.

Fielding should be reinstated unless Magee is made mandatory.

Have the Smiths ever stated they won't fight each other?

Yes and Paul has also said that going out to fight after Stephen lost to Selby was such a horrible feeling. Imagine how he would feel going out to fight his own brother.

Also, they both share the same trainer. Fight has absolutely no chance of happening.
