sparring is the best way. Anything you do by yourself will be inferior to sparring. However, practice it shadow boxing, on the double end bag, slip ball, punch mitts etc.

Agree. Sparring is essential otherwise won't get the timing down, but you can work on it while shadowboxing to help work the right muscles.

Slipping punches are all about secondary muscle memory.
Repetition, repetition, repetition.
A mirror and time are the only real essentials.
Once competent at the core movements the sparring will nail down the timing.

As a non-boxer, what about the rope drills that you see people doing, bobbing under a rope from side to side?

They're excellent but not much point to a beginner until you get the footwork down to being second nature.
You'd be better of drawing or creating a straight line on the gym floor and placing feet either side as you learn the movements of slipping, rolling and moving forwards/backwards in your correct stance.

There's a small maize ball you can buy called a 'slipping ball'; you may get one from Sugar Rays, Ringside or ebay. There was famous footage of Mike Tyson using one to develop his slipping technique.

You can put a piece of tape on the mirror the width of a boxing glove and when shadow boxing in front of the mirror, move your head to both sides of the tape. Don't bend at the waist. Twist at the waist and bend at the knees.
