copperbox 12th April

Just a quick comment on how disappointed I am with the copperbox show AGAIN

Updated schedule on WBN is a lot different to Boxrec...

http://www.worldboxingnews.net/schedule.html

These shows have gone from decent to very average quickly,,

If i was Frank I would try and get
Degale back, martin murray, Andy Lee, Groves, price, anybody decent not signed to matchroom to improve the quality of the shows

The international content is really top class but the domestic scene is only average at the moment and I will not have any interest in this show as all the results are predictable

Surely Eddie Chambers is not fighting Moses Matovu ??

allegedly is all about the international schedule. You wouldn't buy it for the domestic stuff. Console yourself with PAC-Bradley a few hours later.

The 2nd Copperbox show fell apart so badly I created a thread 2 months ahead of the 3rd one, to monitor the fate of the original card. It fell apart shockingly although Fwank did bring in the Fury's. But all the title bouts that were originally announced just didn't happen on the night.

Judged purely as a promoter staging boxing shows, this promoter is dead in the water. All his top fighters (save Frankie Gavin and Derek Chisora) have left him, and I'd say that any fight he announces, has a greater than 50% chance of not happening.

But if you judge the situation in the round - his creation of the world's first dedicated boxing channel and all the problems, distractions and costs that brings - he is doing a sterling job in very difficult circumstances. He is delivering to the subscribers, and then some.

I think he tried really hard to shore up the Copperbox 2 and 3 shows, and this time, he's just thought "fxxk it, what happens, happens", accepting the show is thread-bare.

He couldn't care less as long as the ticket sellers are on. This will be his most profitable.

Agreed. There's some good fighters on the show, I've no problem with it and am really looking forward to it. I hope Eubank jnr still features.

I would be surprised if neither Butler or Saunders for for world honours in next 18 months

True, I overlooked them. Either are good enough to headline a copperbox show.

I wouldn't say the other Copperbox shows have been particularly poor. This one isn't particularly strong in my opinion tho. Queensbury's Liverpool show is looking pretty good tho.

They're alright, a point I have laboured to make (and bored even myself making it) is that the original advertised bill and the one you eventually get are completely different with these promotions. As a fan, it intrigues me what must go on behind the scenes with so many fights falling through. But fair play to him, he sticks with the date and last time out he brought in the Fury's to bolster up the promotion.

There were fights involving some fighters from the North-East (Dixon vs Corcoran, Hughes vs Fury, Mitchell vs Cope) - all of which appear to have gone down the pan. Shame, as they looked interesting on paper.

You really would not beleive what goes on behind the scenes.Steve woods had a great show in oldham the other week started with 14 fights worrying how they were all going to get on.Due to pull out left right and center we were struggling come fight day to put six fights together to keep the title fight card from folding.

A few shows ago i had a bham show that was matched 10 days before in the last week i had to rematch 7 of the eight fights in cluding the masters main event at the last minute.

I certainly appreciate the difficulties of getting xx number of people in the same place at the same time jon, I've grey hairs over it ! I'm sure you had the same frustrations yourself. Even when they all agree, it never seems to comes off. I guess the thing with a show is, once one guy is out, that fight is down the pan.

Is it just me or does it feel like the Copperbox hasn't really taken off as a venue for allegedly yet? The 2 shows so far haven't sold out. Both shows ended with very little people left in attendance for the main event due to people having to leave for the tube. I've yet to see a allegedly event recapture the atmosphere the Cobberbox generated during the Olympics. I thought the Copperbox was supposed to be the ace up his sleeve?

The ticket sellers on it mean that he probably makes money off the shows anyway. For the attendances of the shows, it probably fits right for him, Wembley Arena's too big, York Hall's too small, but the Copperbox is in the middle. Might not be costing him much to use either, the layout means it's not really suited to concerts, I don't think it gets used that much, so he might be able to get it cheaper, especially with block booking for 6 shows over 12 months.

Nice to see Fwank trying something different for this show as well, offering £15 tickets for kids.

£15 for kids would be great if there was a chance of the show finishing before 11pm, but that doesn't seem to be the way it works out. Not sure I'd want to take my kids if its going past midnight and I'm going to have to wing it to make my way home.

Is there no parking at the Copperbox?

At the risk of being mean I think the blame is completely Bradley Skeete's. His distance fights push the show's overall duration very late into the night. They should put him on last, so people can stay to see it, or get off home.

An important ingredient for a big show really taking off has to be a good main event and chief support, that actually hold together. All these shows get chopped and changed in terms of who is on, who's fighting who, what title is being defended, and so on. I appreciate that the promoter would not want any of this to happen but it happens a lot and I think if you removed the fans who support the undercard ticket sellers from the arena, you would be left with very few other people paying to attend these shows.

If you go to see Fury/Chisora or Froch/Groves, you know what you want, and you're paying to see great match ups. With the copperbox shows, it's not like that, and I think - as Chad points out - that the venue hasn't taken off as the promoter would have hoped for. Between him launching the venue as his regular home, and now, he's lost a lot of his main event fighters. You have to admire how he keeps going though. If Sky do reduce their boxing budget next year, things could get very interesting indeed. I wonder if any defectors would be going back and knocking on his door ?

When the home fighters all win comfortably, everyone complains about mismatches and calls it a shit show, then when the home fighters are matched tougher and get beat, it's still a shit show

Probably more by accident than design but it turned out to be a fairly competitive card.

The Keane v Warburton matchup was probably the strangest of the lot. I hope he doesn't lose heart.

I thought it was a really entertaining bill, a few proper upsets and a good standard throughout. Good fights, though maybe not the names to sell it.
