Julian Jackson v Tommy Hearns (at middle)

Following the good thread, Nigel Benn v Julian Jackson, who would win? My mind wandered and I imagined a bout between the Hit Man and The Hawk.

Who would win, how and why?

Assuming it's the Hearns from 47/54 fighting at Middle like he sometimes did I'd take Tommy by early KO. The version that came back down from Light Heavy and actually won a belt is a 50/50 fight with somebody going down inside of 3 rounds.

I was thinking the Hearns that got in with Hagler and demolished James Schuler and a Jackson that had just moved up to middle but had full vision.

I can imagine only a shoot out with horrible punches going in.

I think Jackson would get Tommy out in a couple of rounds and the crowd would have been on their feet from the first bell.

I tend to agree, but then I think about your Hearns bias, and I think maybe not.

If Tommy Boxes he wins. If he shoots it out.....harder to say....it turns 50/50 or worse real fast. Depends on how smart he is that day.

Hearns takes Jackson out early, unless of course he drops that dodgy left hand guard and gets caught with a massive jackson bomb.

They don't make a vaccination for that shot.

I have Hearns love, not bias. Two different things.

I understand, and glad you are of confessional mind. Indeed love IS blind.

So when it comes to Hearns, I'll do the assessing, and you do the listening.

Otherwise....an intervention would be called for.

Hearns by KO in 3 or UD12 if he chooses to box. Jackson had power but I don't rate him that high. Most of his KOs were against vulnerable fighters. He never KOd a Cuevas, Roldan or Duran.

From memory, the Graham fight was his first proper fight at middle, and he'd already had one detached retina.

:salut: Yeah, that's why I altered reality a little bit for this bout.

Remember Graham boxing rings round Jackson? Tommy was a better boxer. Remember McCallum punching him all over the ring? Tommy hit harder. Jackson definitely has the pop to hurt him, but he needs to hit the button. I don't see Tommy throwing the kitchen sink at him, like with Hagler, because he'll know that he will have more advantage as the fight went on, whereas against Hagler, he knew his chances are going to reduce as the fight goes on.

For me, he out boxes him like Herol, but he doesn't hang hours chin out, and he stops him at will any time after the sixth.

Tommy to hurt Jackson early and finish him. Tommy was so much better in every department.

I like Hearns a lot, but Jackson would be dangerous. I don't know.

I don't think Hearns would box someone if he knew he could hurt them, he not be able to help himself but go for it. I don't think he'd be able to easily outbox Julian either - Herol Graham was a master southpaw.

He out boxed Ray Leonard, Jackson would struggle bigtime unless Tommy went gung-ho. Jackson was quite slow of foot.

The ONLY WAY I see Julian Jackson winning this fight is to x-amount of substancial pressure. I do not see it other way. He is not going to win with a lucky punch, neither would he outbox the great Hitman.

I believe that both at their best, hit very hard, but Tommy had more boxing skills. None of the two had the best of chins, though.

I'm not sure what you're smoking; I'm Herol's biggest fan, and I have a minority opinion that hours skills belong in the same bracket as Hearns, but a BETTER boxer he was not. Also, who did Jackson ever outbox? Thomas Tate? Hearns, as had been mentioned, outboxed Leonard. Jackson was clumsy, with limited skills.

Hearns by KO inside of 5 rounds.

He'd spear Jackson with that piston like jab & swell his eyes up, then he would crunch him with a big Right hand.

Hearns was a very good boxer but relied on his height and reach - not on technique and defensive guile and versatile countering. Who did Hearns outbox who was the same size as him? Herol outboxed many men his size and taller with longer reach. That is the sign of a master boxer.

Virgil Hill & Nate Miller are two guys bigger than him that he soundly out-boxed past his best.

Hearns boxing skills were impeccable. Footwork, jab, reflexes, he had it all. Jackson had power. B level vs Elite level fighter IMO. Jackson's highlight reel looks good, but those guys he beat were not of the level of the guys Tommy beat.

They are good big guys to beat fair enough.

Hey tom :salut: the discussion went toward Herol Graham and I said that Herol (not Jackson) was a better boxer than Hearns; though saad named 2 big fellows that Tommy outboxed out of his prime I do think that Herol was a better pure boxer given he did not have the reach and height advantages of Tommy.
