I could keep going, literally, but the point is that boxing autobiographies tend to be fairly self serving as a rule and so given the above I can only assume that Chuvalo's will be nauseatingly so. This has nothing to do with whether Chuvalo is a nice guy. I admit that he seems like a guy who if you met him on the street hed be super nice. That doesnt mean I have to like or agree with his feelings on his own career.

Considering the fighters he faced, the punches he took to the head and the rotten private life he's endured I can't believe how well he looks and how well he still speaks. I'd love to have him in the UK for a meet n greet. The guy's whiskers were carved out of granite. 8)

I was wondering how this book has reviews already when it hasnt even been published yet?
That one review of the lady who gave the book to her husband as a gift and he said it was 'okay'?

Maybe she is confusing George Chuvalo's upcoming autobiography with the earlier book about George Chuvalo entitled FEARLESS
which came out several years ago.From what I understand that book was geared for
people and readers in junior high school.

Chuvalo couldnt look at a book about Harry Greb without getting cut, bruised, and swollen. Greb from 1917 on would be awarded a W 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, or 20 over Chuvalo any day of the week. The cement footed (and headed) Chuvalo would be clueless and catching all night long.

....I like the ol' Canadian....and suspect he just might give a pretty good accounting of himself even in his 70's. So for anyone who does not think they need to worry about this guy....fair warning....you just might wear yourself out trying to get the upper hand over a fella that durable. And once your tired, he just might pick you apart.

At first I only saw Il Duce's contribution, and I thought you had put him out of your misery by using the ignore option. So the warning was originally intended for him and what looked to me (at first) that he was baiting you without provocation.

When I saw that in fact it was a back and forth aspect I realized, you were conversing with him...and the two of you were at it. So I withdrew the warning aspect. Though I do wish you guys would take it outside.

Thanks for the mindful constructive critical review.

My observation for you in return, is that the only difference I can see between you and your overly imaginative friend is that you are a tad more reactionary when you are caught imagineering.
And some of your preceding statement is surely got some imagined aspects...and authors (more often than not,) know which is which. Deception sorts itself out on it's own (regardless the subject matter or from who's pen it originates).

The "rule/s" you seem to be referring to must be that another contributor must agree with you to be within the rules.

There are no rules about opinions, just behaviors. (Including you're opinion on my performance.)

Yep, I find it hard to dislike Chuvalo. What fighter does not see himself as being one moment, action, or a judgement from winning every battle? Why would that push anyone's buttons? If you don't have confidence I would think it would be a pretty bad career choice...lol. And yep that confidence borders on egomania from time to time. But Chuvalo's brand of that does not offend me one iota.

I like George - he was certainly one of the toughest guys to enter a ring - he has used the tragedies in his life to help others and he was a significant heavy in the divisions greatest era.
I bought klomptons greb book which is excellent. I am disappointed that klompton descends to immature carping about chuvalo. and I know many fighters older than 70 who have had a few good whippings in their time who could make mincemeat out of the armchair warriors on this website

I haven't read his book, so I can't really comment on that. I get where Klompton's is coming from in regard to his criticisms about Chuvalo having excuses. (Don't know if Chuvalo did that in the book though)

Fighters often have excuses, however some are worse than others in regard to this.
I think some of Chuvalo's could be justified in cases where he lost a close decision.
For example his losses to Cleroux were close, and many people thought he won the first one in particular.
Some are a little stretch, for example to claim he got robbed against Patterson. It was a close fight, but Patterson deserved the decision.

As for his criticism regarding how good he was, point out some of losses; that is legitimate since it is true. Some were to very good or great opponents, but some weren't, as Klompton pointed out.

To be fair to Chuvalo, he did beat Quarry, Doug Jones, and Cleroux once. He won the DeJohn fight even though he complained about the officiating.
Even though he lost to Patterson, he fought a great fight.
For what his it's worth, he was still the Canadian champion until he retired in 1978 when he was about 40.

It looks like the row will run and run, I imagined klompton would rise above any baiting as he's wrote a book; some of il duce threads are hard going and some are really good. I think on this thread BoxBuzz walks a fine line and he lets things go as much as possible, that's a better thing to do than getting involved and throwing the weight around every post. I'd be ashamed of myself if I weren't afraid of a 76 year old who used to do what Chuvalo did in his prime - if you're to give someone respect and fear them when they're young are you to laugh at them when they age? I'd tip my hat to the bones of a Greb, a Leonard, a Burley, a Robinson and any number of fantastic fighters. Chuvalo has gone through 7 circles of hell with his family problems and to see his kids die in the same way and that he can function well is a real testament to his character.
