Two questions.

Is he the greatest ever fighter from Chatham?

And does anyone know what he's up to nowadays? He had a hell of a lot of heart. Maybe too much for his own good.

Whatever he is doing, I hope that he is still rocking the mullet.

He made that haircut his own.

I saw him very briefly in a hotel with his other half going to a wedding reception or something in nearby Rainham over a year ago. Seemed a friendly bloke who appreciated that I knew who he was. I saw one of his fights live in Gillingham against a Russian who he said he remembered was very strong. Not sure what Johnny is doing now (it was that brief) but he looked in good health. Think he said he was doing some coaching.

Really exciting boxer to watch who had a massive heart. Hope he is doing well.

Still see him around medway from time to time. Think he is involved ith a bit of training as a chap I know is getting himself in shape for an unlicensed fight and Armour is helping.

Nice bloke. The best fighter from Chatham? Of course. Think he is still the only St Mary's fighter to win a senior ABA title and nobody from Medway has come close to emulating his pro career.

His fights with Francis Ampofo were some of the best I've ever seen in a British ring. Quality fighter.

He beat Paul Ingle to win his ABA title in 1990, having previously run into the great John Lyon a few times in the ABAs. Against Ingle, he let the precocious 17-year-old make the early running and then came on strong to take the points. Even over three rounds, you can pace a fight.

He was very good and he used to cut bad, very fit as well, he'd have done well with 15 rounds. Mint haircut as well - he just didn't care did he?

He is always presenting trophies at amateur shows in kent as Pat Sharpe.

Cracking little fighter. Some of his Commonwealth title fights were excellent.

I don't think he capatilised on his peak years coming through, heard various stories about his volatile nature, but always enjoyed watching him.

Frank Maloney was moving Johnny well but then Maloney's backer (Roger Levitt) went tits up and Mickey Duff took over the promotional reins for Armour and moved him slowly but surely, with the emphasis on slowly.

I personally think he is just behind Jamie Moore in the list of Greatest British fighter in last 15 years never to have fought for a World title (and no I am not counting his WBU title).

Maybe a case for Spencer Oliver and Dean Francis also, but their careers were cut short.

Not many undefeated Commonwealth and European Champions who do not get a world title shot these days.

Actually thinking about it, how high would he be in relation to the greatest fighter never to fight for the British title? Bruno... but who else?

Two good shouts for both of my questions, both worthy of British title fights for sure. In terms of being more deserving than Armour for a proper world title fight? ummm.... its close but I would say at his pomp, Armour was more clear the #1 in his devision domestically than both Khaliq and certainly Roberts, so I would say for that reason more deserving of a world title fight.

Very entertaining boxer, he used to work the body very well, and if he could get to a boxer he usually won. Seemed to struggle sometimes in distance fights, had alot of close decision wins, some disputed.

armour would have relished a world title shot - but I reckon both steve Roberts and khaliq are mighty glad they never had to fight at the top level. good fighters, yes, but when it really mattered would not have fancied it against a really class dangerous opponent
