Mitchell to double-up

Dagenham featherweight starlet Kevin Mitchell is to fight twice in one week as he continues to blaze through his first year as a professional.
The 19-year-old features on the undercard of British and Commonwealth heavyweight Champion Matt Skelton at London's York Hall on 5 June.

And the following Saturday he will appear on the Joe Calzaghe-Ricky Hatton double-bill at Manchester's MEN Arena.

"I'll be fit and ready for both shows," said the 2003 ABA champion.

Last Thursday at the York Hall, Mitchell took his record to 7-0 with a first-round stoppage of Frenchman Slimane Kebaile - his fifth first-round win.

And "Mighty" Mitchell, who won last year's ABA featherweight title in his first attempt in the senior ranks, is unphased at his latest challenge.

"In the amateurs I'd sometimes box twice on the same night and this is just another test for me as a professional.

"Joe and Ricky are big heroes of mine so I'm looking forward to this show the most. It would have been an honour to box on either of their undercards separately but to appear under both on the same night is a dream."

but as i always say first 10 fights is just padding anyway 10 to 20 is when u should start testing yaself a bit.

DG: admittedly hatton has fought a lot of walkovers but not all of em have been hopeless.

krivolapov: although he didn't have anything to win with he was teak tough and showed ricky he just can't walk thru guys the way he'd been doing.

magee: toughest test of his career to date and it was a fight hatton had to adapt in and prove he was more than just a brawler.

phillips: tough and could pack a punch again showed that hatton could absorb some big punches. and beat the crap out of guys for 12 rds solid.

tackie: tougher than tough and hungry till the last also proved hatton could be a boxer rather than just a brawler and still remain exciting.

this year has been disappointing and i like u think hatton should have had these big fights 18 months ago but unfortunately he hasn't.

be patient and hatton will come good i guarantee it.

I was joking - but Hatton is fast becoming SHITMAN - he needs tpo break free of fwank and Snorts Wetwork !...

Mitchell's starting to push me towards the same edge that another fighter, (who shall remain nameless), tipped me over recently. He really needs to be stepped up, and quickly. I know it's starting to sound like a broken record, but he won't learn anything by beating the guys he's fighting at the moment. He's so much better than them it's untrue. At this rate he'll have won 25 straight within 3 years without ever having fought anyone.

It's a shame because the talent is quite clearly there. With better management Mitchell could be a future star for British boxing. Instead i fear he'll become another money maker for a certain promoter. I don't want the moon on a stick, i don't think he should be fighting for the British title yet, but what i would like to see is him in with someone who'll be able to take him a few rounds and actually fight back.

I can hear Jimmy Lennon jr jr now "In the red corner, with a perfect professional record of 102 wins, 95 KO's and no losses. The WBU champion of the world.........Kevin Mitchell". A bit harsh maybe, but it's not an impossibility.

Mitchell is cocky yes, but surely you have to have a self assurance and cockiness to be great at most sports.

What is FW meant to do put him in with Scott Harrison or maybe Wayne McCulloch, give the man a break he is a 7 fight veteran give the kid a chance..

i understand that there is no need to rush. But the art of bringing a prospect up correctly, given them a great possibility to reach their potential, is to match them in fights that they will learn from. All of Mitchell's fights have been very one-sided so far, and thats sometimes the case with prospects...because they are so good. But with Mitchell it's more that his opponents are so bad. 3 or 4 of them haven't even won a fight.

With the stiffs Warren feeds him he could have a fight every half hour.

He is 19 for gods sake, ok he isnt fighting good quality yet but at least he is keeping busy and shows drive and determination.

I just hope he isnt guided to keeping fighting lower quality opponents as he matures.
What do you want him to do be fighting for the brit title in his 7th fight at the age of 19? come on.

Yeah, he is a baby - we shouldn't really even be discussing him at all at this stage - way to early.

J - I certainly don't think Mitchell should be fighting anyone good but he should be fighting established journeymen pros who can teach him different things - such as which combinations work against different styles, use of angles etc.

These one round blowouts against French novices are counter-productive. You wonder if this would have happened if Ernie Fossey had still been alive - he was fantastic at getting novice prospects along the learning curve at the right pace.

fair point loynesy and agreed mate lets hope that starts to happen..just think we are being a biut savage for someone who hasnt even had 10 fights and is only 19.

No, I wasn't overmatched. The McMillan fight was a barnstormer, and the decision was jeered by McMillan's own London supporters. Ernie Fossey made the match with McMillan after watching me beat Deveney.

How do you think Mitchell would fare against today's British Champions i.e. Dazzo Williams, Michael Gomez or Bobby Vanzie, Graham Earl, depending on what weight he settles at?
