Just seen that viacom has bought channel 5 (or in the process of) wonder what that will mean for Mick and the like.

I'd say the long term future does not look rosey. No real history of sports broadcasting. With a portfolio of channels like Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon I'd say Viacom have no appetite for boxing.

Viacom are the parent company of the Bellator MMA promotion.

O_O WOW Game changer in British TV I think. They have the money to bank roll whatever they want and make channel 5 actually respectable...
...alternatively they could just pump old MTV crap on to the channel...

and Spike TV regularly shows GLORY Kickboxing aswell.
If the boxing does good numbers (which apparently it does) there is no need for them to get rid of it...

Yeah, I thought that.
Maybe it'll be alright. If it gets good numbers, maybe they'll keep it on.
I hope so, as they've started getting decent fights coming onto Channel Five. After years of watching Tyson Fury laying the smack down on part time cruiser-weights and James DeGale looking like he can't be arsed against journeymen, they've actually started putting on boxing that is worth watching.

Viewing figures have steadily declined every show the past year for boxing on Channel 5. The ratings don't look good at all from what they usually got with Fury and DeGale. They've all been nearly half of what they used to get. With the League show being 90 min highlights on a Saturday 30+ weeks a year and there being usually a 2 month break in the summer for boxing in the UK. It will be hard to see consistent boxing coverage.

Once you get past the first 2 rounds of the FA Cup, enough lower league teams have gone out for there to be enough games to put a highlights show together for. May-August, a Saturday in November and another in December doesn't leave a lot of dates.

but its not like its every week the now... no reason they cant put a boxing show on after the highlights aswell if its 90 mins, and the football would be a good lead into it

Why does it have to be a Saturday? I can remember when most of the major shows were held on Tuesdays.

This is a good point.
Even if they want it at a weekend, no reason they can't make it a Friday night. Sky Sports used to show Friday Fight Nights every week and nobody moaned. Especially as Channel 5 seem to show more small hall shows anyway. I can understand why they'd want a big stadium fight on a Saturday, to give fans who are travelling a long way a chance to get there. But say you're having an event in Bluewater in Kent, I can imagine most fans going are local anyway. No reason that couldn't be a Friday night.
Things like Gennady Golovkin vs Martin Murray may be beyond Channel 5's control when their shown, but they can always show the football or the boxing on 5* in an emergency.
