Mike Tyson wasn't so far past his best that he could lose to Johnny Nelson. Nelson would either go into his shell and lose every round or, more likely, get whacked.

Julius Francis would have been a more realistic heavyweight for Nelson to try.

That would have been intruiging watching Nelson shrugging his shoulders for 12 rounds, whilst a washed up Tyson tried to tag him with single shots for 12 rounds.

I suppose I'm being unfair on Nelson as he was a long way from the embarrassing fighter he was in 1990 against DeLeon & Warring in 1992, because by 2000, he'd overcome his nerves, but I still think Tyson had just enough left to scare Nelson witless.

What happened in the lift?
Nelson could certainly take a shot to be fair to him, not many cruisers would be able to go the distance with corrie sanders

Nelson could always beat journeymen, which is what he did throughout his WBO 'reign'. But plenty of past-it and fragile heavyweights easily defeated him. The idea of Mike Tyson losing to him, at any point, is absurd.

I never heard once Johnny Nelson being touted as an opponent for Mike Tyson - even in jest.

Tyson was past his prime obviously.... but wasn't finished. He was still amongst the top 10 heavyweights at the time.
Years later he would still last 8 rounds with Lewis and demolish Clifford Ettiene (who was more of a HW threat than Nelson would be) in a round.

I would see a Tyson KO in 4 or 5 rounds

There's an amusing bit in your book when you're in an elevator with your wife when it stops at a floor ... and who shapes to get in but Mike Tyson, who you'd just been calling out at a press conference! Oh my goodness I nearly shit myself! That was the thing about all the bravado I used to come out with at press conferences - most of the time it was just meant to hide my fear. I was so relieved when the lift doors closed and we got away.

X2. How does losing every round to Sanders mean he could beat Mike Tyson ?!?!?!?!

It's one thing basing conclusions like that on the bare stats, but nobody who enjoyed the ups and downs of Nelson's career could possibly believe he would have a chance against Tyson.

All you've got to do his buy his book. There's a few pages dedicated to it. Great times and so funny.

My dad bought me it at xmas, I thoroughly enjoyed it. He's a really down to earth bloke, he comes across like someone who accidently ended up a boxer and made the best of it. His take on the Deleon fight was very candid.

I suspect Nelson would have handled him. I doubt he'd have sh*t himself very much. He'd have made a packet too probably.
