Jamie McDonnell fights for the vacant WBA Bantamweight Title on the undercard of Froch vs Groves against a guy who in his last 2 fights has fought a 0-1 and fighter making his debut :o ?

How can this be sanctioned ??????

Now that is one bizarre record most of the people he has met have only had a few fights. Sanctioning bodies just do as they please so its no massive surprise what shit they sanction.

People REALLY need to learn how boxing works in other countries...let me try to explain Thailand and the WBA.

The WBA have a regionally affiliated belt called the Pan Asian Boxing Association belt (from now on referred to as PABA). This is effectively one of two major Asian titles that are to be viewed as "on par" with the European (from now on referred to as the EBU title). Holding the PABA belt, as Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat did until the end of last year, helps a fighter gain a WBA ranking and defending it helps a fighter climb up the rankings.

If a fighter holds and defends the EBU belt we would expect them climb the world rankings. The same applies with the PABA title.

Now on to Tabtimdaeng's opponents. In Thailand there are fighters who fight regularly, look at Tabtimdaeng's activity with 6 fights in the last year. That is so that he can get paid, albeit much, much less than what a British "world ranked" fighter gets paid. These bouts are regularly mismatches so that don't risk a loss and lose their world ranking.

A recent "ranked fighter" suffering a loss was Tiger Tor Buamas who, like Tabtimdaeng, lost to Filipino Alie Laurel (http://boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=684905) Tiger was world ranked and viewed Laurel as an easy foe but was upset and set back notably as a result.*

Tabtimdaeng fighting his last 2 opponents helped him feed himself and his family.

Are we next going to suggest that Srisaket sor Rungvisai (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer) should be stripped of his world title fight fighting in stay busy fights prior to his mandatory defence?

*edit-reading back this sentence doesn't make sense. Tabtimdaeng didn't lose to Laurel like Tiger To Buamas, but was world ranked and suffered a major loss in an apparent mismatch.

McDonnel is ranked #20, albeit it at 122lbs on boxrec.

Those Thai 7 fighters ranked above Tabtimdaeng include:
Pungluang Sor Singyu-WBO mandatory (fights Tomoki Kameda later this year, and is a former WBO champion)
Suriyan Sor Rungvisai-#1 ranked WBC challenger and former WBC Super Flyweight title holder (lost to the guy Srisaket smashed)
Tepparith Kokietgym-Former WBA Super Flyweight champion
Panomroonglek Kaiyanghadaogym-Former WBA titlechalenger who ran Koki Kameda VERY close
Rusalee Samor-IBF ranked fighter who's last loss was VERY controversial to a cash cow in Macau
Petch Kokietgym-WBC and WBA ranked unbeaten fighter

Basically 3 former champions, someone who could well have been a world champion had it not been for 1 judge, and two other world ranked fighters.

Far from it, I've actually seen Tabtimdaeng fight and he'll get slaughtered. But it's common for fighters from Thailand to fight this sort of opponent for their meals and the such. Wonjongkam was doing it between title fights like Srisaket does.

I'm not questioning the sanctioning of the bout because of his last 2 opponents however, I'm basing my view on having seen him in action. His ranking is ridiculous though it's due to the PABA title reign.

An excellent article explaining this type of thing went on Asian Boxing earlier:

Well worth a read if you're interested in this type of thing.

My missus is Thai & I can tell you now they give it everything they've got until the very end.

McDonnell will be left knackered, sweaty & completely spent by the end of the evening :(

mexicooo wrote:to be honest, I haven't seen this thai fight, but I can categorically tell you, thai boxers are usually ex muay thai, fighting since like 7 or 8. some that turn over win their world title in under 5 fights They are harder, stronger, better conditioned etc than almost all of their UK counterparts. If this guy is semi legit, hell smash mcdonell, if not mcdonell on points possibly, bcos he doesn't crack.

Uk has fallen way off in terms of boxing countries, no doubt there will be fanboys that disagree.
Feel free to find the last fighter from Thai that was fast tracked like that (and Amnat Ruenroeng doesn't count as he came from an amateur boxing background, not Muay Thai). The closest to that right now is Jomthong Chuwatana, the OPBF champion at 130.

Historically your right, the BEST Thais are from Muay Thai like Kittikasem, Muangsurin, Veeraphol, Payakaroon though we don't see many of them types around at the moment. One Thai who is 3-0, Palangpol I think, is from that background and looks VERY good though.

What happened to Som Song? That man could hit terribly hard - he fractured Kevin Plants skull with a punch.

It might have been the same man :TU: I remember reading that he'd had around 300 knockouts in Muay Thai bouts.

I'm just glad that one of Britain's fittest, and certainly Britain's best combination puncher, has a way back on to the world scene, on a big show as well. hopefully the thai rises to the occasion. most of them don't travel too well.

there have been memorable brit vs thai matchups in the past - john davison's drawn out war with the huge sakda sorpakdee comes to mind, as well as magri's unsuccessful world title fight with chitalada. the latter is a better fight than ppl remember - magri was really nailing him with his chin up, backing him up and looking great - 'til chitalada put the combos together...
