WhosTheDaddy's journey to step through the ropes!

Hi everyone, I am going to use this blog as my own personal journal to getting in the ring...
I am 28 years old next month and have decided I want to have an amateur or white collar bout (and a win) before I reach 30!

I am currently 6'0, 246 lbs and BF% is in the early 20s.
Ive mainly weight trained/bodybuilt for about 5 years but every so often I get a few boxing sessions in, (basic circuits, some sparring) but ive decided I need to give it a go or I will always regret not doing it!

All diet/training tips welcome and encouraged!!

Thanks, WHD!

Find a good club where people wont take liberty's on you and get as much sparring in as possible. Also get plenty cardio done to get your fitness up. The hardest thing will be controlling your nerves before the actual fight as nerves alone will drain a lot of your stamina from you but adrenaline should get you through if you have done the hard work.

I had my one and only amateur fight at the age of 27 (now 29) so know exactly how you feel but I had always been boxing, pads etc and keeping fit until that point so just had to focus and get on with it.

Sparring is the main thing tho, punchbags, padwork etc will only get you so far.... Without good (educational, controlled) sparring you will be in for a nightmare on the night.

Best of luck mate. Go smash some fuc/(ers up.

Thanks for the reply.

There are a few clubs in my area so I will try several and see which seems to be the best. What is the best cardio for boxing, apart from obviously road running?

At your weight road running would hammer your joints.

Look at doing weights circuits, sprints on the bike or rower, some steady state work on the x trainer or swimming for recovery.

Clean your diet up and focus on eating clean, fuelling your workouts and recovering from them. As you'll likely compete at heavyweight let the training take care of your weight. The better the fuel you put in your body the better it will perform. Lean protein, healthy carbs and good fats. Plenty of fruit, veg and salads.

Supplements wise, creatine, beta alanine and caffeine pre training are a good start point for sports specific supplements. A good multi vitamin and vitamin d at 6000iu per day along with 4-6g of a good quality omega 3 fish oil will cover the bases of good nutrition too.

If you're serious then log every weights, conditioning and boxing session. Keep a check on how you feel, a training diary let's you know where you're really at in terms of progress too.

Good luck!

Sparring will be the number one thing to get you ready and prepare you.

Get on a rowing machine if you have access. It will build up good lung endurance.

Calisthenics for strength and agility.

Kettlebells are a good workout.

Yoga is awesome as well.

Thanks for the advice, a rower never even crossed my mind!

6/5/14 - weight 246
13/5/14 - weight 242
dropped 4 lbs in first week..mainly due to diet i think as my training consisted of, 2 run/walks with the dog over approx 3k, 1 45 spin class and 5 rounds on the heavy bag in my garage. need to get my weight down to around 230 asap just so i can start doing more training without it hammering my knees/ankles..reasonable start and the 4 lbs (although not loads) has re enforced my motivations :D :bag: :TU:

Good work, don't know what kind of budgets your working to mate but if I were you id consider buying a heart rate monitor.
Educate yourself about max heart rates and different heart rate zones etc and it can assist you massively with your training.

Some people think its over the top but I like using mine for running and cycling so that I know when to push it/chill out etc.
