Boomer Bellew repeated twice that Liverpool is the home of boxing. Is this correct?

Who does Liverpool have right now or have had over the past 30 years to justify this claim?

Bellew - fought for two world titles and lost them both
Price - Stepped up and was stopped twice by a 40+ year old Thompson
Smith Brothers -
Paul stopped by Degale and Groves easily
Stephen - Knocked out by Selby and best win is over Buckland
The other two brothers doing very well and look like solid prospects
Selkirk, Satchell, Fielding, Stalker, Matthews? Doubt there are any world champs there.
Butler might make it though?

Champions in last 30 years? Hodgkinson.

It is fair to say that liverpool have a few decent prospects at the minute, but so do most areas (notably London9

However if we look at the recent past, I would not say that Liverpool has anything to shout about.

I know they love their nans and they care, but to call it the home of boxing and to repeat this for effect is pushing the boat out a bit too far for my liking.

There are good fighters from Liverpool/Merseyside but they have a tendency to slip when the final pass is made (no slight on Gerrard intended)

Am I wrong or am I wrong?

I agree, it was a silly comment, especially when he kept repeating it.
Not just factually silly but it also alienated a large majority of boxing fans from other areas of the country who may have supported him.

I must admit I did a slight WTF to his comment but it does have a tradition for boxing.

I was more wtf about his claim about Smith being a unified champ, not just a world champ.

Also, did he forget his shoes when he packed his suit? Did you leave them on the train Tony or are you just too big for your boots?

Sheffield then. Still sh!ts on Liverpool when the others are taken out.

Recently, maybe. Sheffield boxing is largely down to Ingle.

Overall, probably about level, although Hamed skews it.

i would say liverpool, then north west of england is the home of boxing uk.

You have excluded Belfast, in your list.

I know. Mistake on my part. I would argue that in terms of fans and atmosphere (as well as very handy boxers) Belfast takes some beating.

Belfast is a great city for boxing and i think bellew is trying to turn people off him so they want to see him knocked out,,

but they will watch him and thats his plan,,

he talks more shit than anybody in uk boxing

The final straw for me was when he said that he'd do a better job on Clev than Kovalev did.

There is no permanent home of boxing in my eyes. It changes every couple of years, you had Sheffield with Naz, Nelson and the Ingle stable. Manchester when Hatton, Moore, Murray, Khan all fighting regularly. Big fights are now recently starting to end up in Manchester now though, Froch / Groves I & Chisora / Fury II which has to be taken into account.

Not to nitpick but Khan is from Bolton, not Manchester. Granted he fought at the MEN a few times but he's fought just as much in Vegas.

The reason for the number of shows at the MEN (or whatever it is now, Phones 4U) is it's one of the biggest indoor stadiums in the country, it makes sense.

I can't to wait to see Bellew lose at the home of boxing again, will be priceless.

British boxing could be looking for a new home after Smigga and Bellew have both been chinned again.

The York Hall is the home of boxing; I know some people who boxed there and they said it was very atmospheric. The stadium fights are very good for boxing and the casual fan but do not look to be the same. Different regions have periods of boxing ascendancy and there are fantastic gyms and trainers dotted around the country. Though Liverpool has some really good fighters I'd not say it was the hotbed that Bellew says though he knows more than me (and everyone else :) )

Doncaster is the home of boxing.
