Completely hijacked from the current scene, but I know some are interested in how Howard is getting on.

Apparently, the 43 year old has advanced to the final of the Jamaican version of the Contender series at.... get this.... WELTERWEIGHT!

Just seen that on Fightnews and thought it might warrant a thread on here.

Pretty impressive to drag himself down to 147lbs - he's been down there for his past few fights.

Good man he is certainly his own man - I'm glad he's doing ok.

eastman always seemed a big middle weight good knows how he got down to welter weight...

Amazingly he doesn't look like skeletor in the pictures I've seen.

My wife wants some Jamaican scales.

Skeletor actually had a pretty decent physique. Essentially he had a skull for a head, and the rest of the body of quite a buff man.

That was his problem. As a character, he didn't really make a lot of sense.

I think the last time I saw Howard Eastman fight, it was against Duddy. It was on BBC Ireland.

I liked both He-Man and She-Ra as a kid, but I wached She-Ra as an adult and it was pretty obviously aimed at girls. I dunno what that says about me.

Though, to be fair. After not watching She-Ra for 20 years, I couldn't remember none of the characters. I could still name all of He-Man's characters.

I always liked Howard Eastman. He came across as quite an eccentric individual. Unconventional.

I liked that about him.

It's been 20 years since I've seen either. I hate watching cartoons that I liked when I was young now because I convince myself that they weren't really that good. And maybe they weren't but it ruins the nostalgia.

That's another thing I've read as an adult, and have found it to be not very good. But I thank that is reflected more in the fact that I was a kid in the 1980s and early 1990s reading it. The kids of 2014 aren't going to be interested in the same sort of jokes or references that we were.

For example, about three or four years ago I was at work, and talk in the office turned to discussing Beano characters we remembered. In a wave of nostalgia, I nipped out at lunchtime and purchased a Beano. A lot of the characters were the same, or at least the main ones were. Dennis The Menace, Minnie The Minx, The Bash Street Kids were all present. But what struck me is how many references to celebrities there are. In fact, in half the stories a celebrity 'appeared'. In that Minnie The Minx would be out and about, and she'd run into Simon Cowell. A few years later somebody got me a Beano Annual for Christmas as a joke. (I used to get it every year as a kid. Some family member got it for me when I was in my 30s a laugh.) Flicking through that I noticed the same thing. Half the stories involved somebody meeting some popular celebrity at the time. Simon Cowell featured heavily again, for some reason. I don't remember that happening that often when I was a kid, and if it did it was usually somebody spoofing the celebrity.

I'm pretty sure in my day the comics were, if not better, were more suited to what we were interested in. The emphasis was more on Dennis The Menace playing with his catapult and being naughty, not Dennis The Menace hanging round with Lady Gaga backstage.

I was at that fight, I thought Eastman deserved it.

I can't see why not, as long as he's licensed?

I'm pleased for him. I liked his attitude and self belief - he seemed a decent fellow and he could really fight; he's done well to get to welter and stay strong - he must have some real will power.

Yeh my I went down London with my pal and cornered him vs Eastman in a mark time 8 rounder, he stopped my pal in 5 but was straight in changing rooms after. A nice chap.

yeah, the old storylines were better - dennis always getting whacked with his dads slipper. the bash street kids always coming unstuck at the end and getting whacked with the schoolmasters slipper. Minnie the minx hiding her dads slipper but he ends up finding it and Minnie getting whacked with it. biffo the bear - never getting whacked with a slipper. a red indian kid doing something um terrible and getting whacked with um slipper. roger the dodger and winker Watson making daft plans and ending up both getting whacked with a size ten slipper. I loved them
