RIP - his name was mentioned many times in boxing news; I'd never seen him box. Why was he called 'cowboy'?

He was called Cowboy because there was another John McCormack in British boxing at the time. Cowboy boxed his last fight against him.

In the a history of Scottish boxing book written in the 1980's - it had an excellent interview with Cowboy McCormack and he said he was given the nickname because he had a bandy legged stance. He refused to speak about the Harry Scott fight in which he was floored 7 times inside a round and was stopped in the first. He also talked about his life in Maryhill I think he was from.

He had some excellent wins, one against Terry Downes and was a triple champion. A good fighter indeed, RIP. :salut:
