Brandon Gonzales

Is it me, or were Brandon Gonzales' comments at the press conference for him and DeGale a bit of a bitch move?

DeGale had mentioned a struggle with depression, and his family helped him through. Brandon made some comments about DeGale being upset over the Groves loss and needed his mummy to tell him to get back in the ring.

It's hard to feel sorry for DeGale. His trash talk about Groves a few years back was over the top, not funny and excrutiating to watch. But the comments he made, it felt like a bitch move by Gonzales to me.

I take everything that boxers say with a pinch of salt.

There is definitely a line that shouldn't be crossed but who knows where that line is anymore?

DeGale is in for a tough night on Saturday, a really good step up for him and if he can get past Gonzales I will be impressed.

I was only half watching. Somebody just told me it was his trainer that said that. If that's true, and I wasn't paying attention, I may have just called him a bitch for no reason.

Anybody confirm which one is the bitch?

It was the trainer who said it

It was Virgil Hunter who said those comments not Gonzales. I thought it was a little below the belt. You say it's hard to feel sorry for Degale but I think he's actually mis-understood. He seems to be the more laid back, cool and quite funny one compared to both Froch and Groves. Geroge just massively got under his skin as he did with Carl in the first fight. Degale hasn't proven himself in the ring fully yet apart from arguably the close fight with Groves and the stoppage of Paul Smith, but his IFL interviews really portray him in a good light. I personally Hope he does well with Matchroom.

Not saying degale is not going to win but hes in for a tough night. Seen gonzales a few times and hes like a 0.80 version of andre ward. Think this will actually be a boring fight, the styles wont mesh but the implications for the winner are huge

I can see what you're getting at. I'd say a less athletically gifted, slightly flat footed version.

Depression is a killer, and shouldn't be used as a trash talking line.

If people think that by mentioning their struggles, they are going to get roundly mocked, then they won't talk about it.

That build up is the finisher

I dont think Hunter was trying to make light of depression generally. I think his point was that when James isnt getting the fancy treatment and all the attention he gets depressed and whines. I think he was pretty much saying he's a diva.

Will reserve judgement until I see it...not slamming him personally

Like I say, I was only half watching. Should've paid more attention before being outraged, I guess.

hunter mentioned the depression in an IFLTv interview too

he wasnt digging him.... just questioning his mental strength... which is a big part of the game at the top level.. so why not

He was more mocking him for whining when things arent going his way from what I could gather. He was saying how Gonzales because of the lack of amateur accomplishments, etc has had to take fights quite often at 3 weeks notice.

Gonzales is a fairly big underdog. Might be worth a tickle.

i haven't seen him lefty but when you say 'less' do you mean 'just a bit less than a very-athletically gifted ward'.... or, like, less gifted? If YKWIM. lol

nah, i'm just saying Degale's athleticism is normally his main trump card. if the dude opposite him has just enough athleticism he'd normally be in for an interesting fight, I'd say

As in he's still relatively quick but like you pointed not as quick as Ward. Also Ward has very fast feet aswell but Gonzales is a little more flat footed. They do some similar things in the ring though and both like to maul at times.

hmmmm interesting, ta

i'm going to go out on a limb and predict that Degale will look really good and sharp for 4-5 rounds then will show signs of his stamina failing, and the fight will die out in a damp squib for the remaining unremarkable rounds.

Hunter is very good at these sly little comments. Takes the pressure off of his fighter whilst getting under the opponents skin.

He's like a cross between Jose Mourinho & Cleveland from Family Guy.

Virgil Hunter talks a load of crap. DeGale was rightly saying he has more experience of going 12 rounds than Gonzales, Hunter then criticised DeGale saying he only has 12 round experience as his opponents have extended him to the max. I thought that was a pretty rich comment from a trainer whose prize asset is Andre Ward, a great fighter but not exactly known as a knock-out artist.

Matchroom fighters have to have five eliminators before getting duffed up in America. It's in their contract.
