What are people's opinions on fighters buying twitter followers? It may come across as harmless but if said boxer is saying he has 29k+ followers to sponsors when his followers are fake it can br percieved as fraudulent. Also if a fighter can promise to sell a lot of tickets and makes out he has a huge fan base bigger than what he has. A promoter is booking him under false pretenses.

There are a few fighters out there who have bought fake followers....see if you can spot them!

When I grew up this was known as grassing. If I were a mod I'd delete this thread and give everyone a second chance.

It happens, not just in boxing, also common in music. For example, Guardian done an article where they grassed Radio 1 for basing playlist on popularity (ie YouTube views, Twitter followers, SoundCloud plays etc).

It works a little like this:

Band A has a really good track that but has 5k followers and 20k youtube views
Band B has an alright song but has been viewed 200k times. People must dig it, lets play/interview them

I guess it could work the same for boxing sponsorship/likelyhood to be interviewed by major publications. Bands/labels have been caught out recently... and so have some UKIP politicians recently (Google would probably bring up some embarrassing examples). Not only a boxing thing. You can buy something like 5k followers for as little as $20

Oh yeah... they are a business at the end of the day. And in like any business, people game the system. That's the joy out of it a little i suppose

Yeah but some Twitter accounts are management type where little/no interaction takes place. You can be a much less successful boxer but constantly interact with fans, which will lead to many more followers

not this one, have you seen his twitter? seems to be hime all the time. Agree you can have big following on there and it not carry over to the ring, but 100k? and he's boring, swiftly unfollowed!!

Ya, that's a bit suspicious to me too. I doubt that simply responding regularly would be close to enough to build that type of following given that he wasn't a high-profile amateur (Joshua just passed 100k--given his heavy promotion that figure is believable) and where's he at in his pro career. I assume most people who follow would've known who he was before they found his twitter, and accounting for those like me who are cognizant of him but don't follow you're looking at several hundreds of thousands or even over a million who know of him, which seems unlikely to me.

i would actually disagree with you, boxing is a short career for most guys and you have to do what you can to get exposure, by buying twitter followers your giving the impression to some people your a bigger deal than you are, and that can attract more attention, sponsorship etc. not saying i agree with it in principle but i can understand the circumstance behind it
