Just thinking about a few unlicensed shows ive been to that had Spencer Alton reffing them.

I knew (and have since looked him up on boxrec) that he was ex pro in terms of both boxing and as a referee.

Got me wondering how many boxers become refs, and would it make for better refs if it happened more often ?

Incidently does anyone know why Spencer Alton stopped reffing as a pro, hes all over the place nowdays seems he probably gets far more work than he ever did as a pro.

Ex Doncaster pro Michael Alexander is a ref, he's been doing some British title fights recently.

Numerous high profile American boxers have refereed but they were usually one-offs. Off the top of my head: Pepp, Dempsey, Louis and of course one of the most high profile pieces of inept referring you're every likely to see, Jersey Joe Walcott.

I'm fairly sure the likes of Mills Lane, Mercante Snr etc all boxed in the military, I seem to remember both their books stating as such but could be wrong. Steele also boxed as a pro and in the Marines, he was Kenny Norton's team-mate.

Alan Sugar's story is a bit of an odd one. Google it if you have time. I've read some of his writing (in a book I have) and it sounds a little fanciful, albeit what he says seems to be backed up by newspaper reports etc.

Is he involved in the promotion? Lee Murtagh does it, but his is more of an all in service. He provides the ring, fighters, the lot.

cheers mate it keeps him involved , hes also passing on tips to my son who won scottish schoolboys in his first year.

good to keep involved in the sport in some way or another

Here are a few ex fighters who are now or have been ref's. Sid Nathan, Dave Parris, Seamus Dunne, Micky Vann, Ian John Lewis, Terry O'Connor, Bob Williams & Big Bad Billy Aird.

maybe im sure we can come up with something - First British / Scottish /Celtic and first name Kevin to be a referee :)

Think quite a few of the current refs have boxed at some level, Amateur or Pro.

Wasn't Terry O'Connor a HW in the 70's who was KO'd by John McDermotts dad?

I hope if Terry was to ref one of John's fights nothing untoward would happen
