How did you decide who was going to be used? Just because I'm sure Peter Buckley would have been good, in fact there were about half a dozen of Nobby's fighters who did 100 fights, Miguel Matthews too. Certainly they would have been better than the 1-12 guy

Well yes and no. From the beginning I wanted a novice journeymen involved to give a different angle. ie why would a young guy choose to start on that path? I think its an interesting question.

But I did want Peter Buckley involved. Unfortunately he couldn't do it for one reason or another.

I would've loved to see Buckley and also Sid Razack in the book.good to see a few of the old guard included. Laight, Thorpe and Nesbit Jody meikle and rockin robin will be good also. But I'm glad a few lads just beginning to learn the trade are putting their story in.id like to read there story and what their doing it for.

I can see how it can happen - decent pro, doesn't sell many tickets, can't get fights, on the wrong end of a few dodgy decisions etc. etc. so drifts into being a journeyman - but it is more difficult for me to understand how somebody would set out at the beginning of their career to be an opponent and willing to lose the vast majority of their fights.

It may be that they just love boxing / fighting, and that this way at least they get paid (and get regular "work").

What I don't like about boxing is that it is often clear that the opponent is not even trying to win, and even more sad is when a journeymen gets a win or turns it on a bit you think flippin 'eck given a fair crack of the whip (training facilities, nutrition, regular fights, well matched etc.) this is a boxer that could have done well.

In my opinion, the current system does not work well and it is to the detriment of the fans/supporters, the boxers themselves (both prospects and journeymen and everybody in between) and to the sport in general.

I don't think anyone turns over intending to lose, it just happens. Some drift into being journeymen, some pack in. Some people hate losing and can't get their heads round how dirty a business it is at the lowest level. Sat, gloved up for five hours as a float bout only to get knocked about for six rounds is far from glamorous!

I went in from my first fight knowing that in the opponents corner I'd never pick up many or any wins. I weren't champion material but could fight so went in from my first intending to fight 100 times and earn a living.i can see people's point of view that there shouldn't be any 80 /20 fights but in the real world we were needed to fill late pull outs and to give prospects rounds without being good enough to knock em out. I feel I turned many young lads over yet never got a fair crack.so yes people do turn over willing to lose or suffer shite decisions to feed and cloth their family.

Well, you had a bit of an insight into it before you turned over so were more realistic. I bet you still came to win more early on though.

also we're hoping to do a little launch event in September maybe at a show if we can agree something with a promoter, perhaps at York Hall as I'm London based. Hopefully get some of the fighters down to sign copies for people if they want, but we haven't set that up yet so can't give any details at the mo...

yeh I make you right.was round pro's from a young age so I knew what I was getting into.still surprised at the amount of young lads starting out that don't seem to understand that if your not selling tickets and you aren't with one of the two big boys. It's impossible to get near title level.what promotor will let you near a ticket selling prospect if you might turn em over. It's a bollix

Good luck with the launch - hope it goes well. If you are looking for venues, worth considering pubs with big upstairs rooms - when I launched my Kirkland Laing biography in 2009, I had the upstairs at the Old Red Cow in Barbican (http://theoldredcow.com/) which went well, and they were very hospitable. No idea if they are still under the same management, but they didn't charge me for the room hire or have any spend minimum or that sort of thing. Am sure you could find a good pub in London on a similar basis.

Only other thought is that it may be worth getting in touch with Boxing Monthly if you haven't done so already. Review in BM was personally important to me as it was more likely to be brutally honest than any other review, so if they like it, you know you've done well, as they know their stuff inside out, and that will help with sales. But also, if you are prepared to stump up some free books, they can be willing to do a free promotion for new subscribers (e.g. first 10 new subscribers get a free copy of your book). I didn't take them up on it purely because all the royalties from my book were Kirk's, so I didn't want to give any copies away apart from press review copies, but in any other situation I thought that sounded like a good idea (i.e. good for BM, good for the writer).

Anyway, sorry if this is all obvious and teaching you to suck eggs, but just wanted to help. Very best of luck!

Thanks a lot Oli. The stall at the show isn't a launch as such, I'm hoping to be at a few shows over the next few months, but the publisher should be organising an actual event sometime. Will def bear your suggestions in mind - cheers for advice.

get onto eddie hearn. Kell Brook has his homecoming fight in Sheffield Dec 6th, plus Bellew v Cleverley 2. Fans from all over the country would love the book. get some of the lads down there to sign it....bingo.... ching ching

Me and mark are actually on the bunce's boxing hour show on the 19th.hopefully mark gets a bit of time on his slot to explain reasons behind doing the book.ive always done everything I can to publicise the job of a journeyman. This quote from Daniel Thorpe I think was always a big thing for me. he struggled with an inner conflict: “Sometimes I accepted the losses. At other times I felt like giving it a go and seeing what I could do. The money’s great as a journeyman, but it can be tough, mentally.” Spot on. I personally can't wait to read the other boys stories.
