Richard Towers comeback

Since being stopped by Aussie Lucas Browne last year, there has been no mention of Richard Towers returning to the ring. I always thought he would be a force on the domestic level. Does anyone know what is going on with him?

Perhaps he can be fodder for Joshua. To be fair he was so completely awful losing to Browne he may well have given up.

The domestic level fighters don't fight each other sadly. It's a shame as there are some good scraps to be made. McDermott should be stripped of his English title and a tournament style competition arranged for it with people like Towers involved-having said that I doubt very much that he would win it.

I've read that Richard has trouble reproducing the form he's shown in sparring on the night.
Perhaps he can earn good wages, travel around being a spar to the heavyweight champions if he no longer wishes to pursue a pro career.
He had a great story behind him. I remember reading it on boxrec years ago.

A decent piece by a very good looking, charismatic writer

Richard has been living & training with Adam Booth in Surrey, Monday-Friday for a long time now, he's rebuilding and learning about the sport and growing has a fighter, I've been lucky enough to be in that camp for a bit and have seen the difference in him, he's enthusiastic and very eager to get fighting again, he's really coming on loads from what I've seen.
In his own words, he never really was taught the fundamental basics of boxing and only got where he got to on natural size & ability, he's said he is learning loads now and his in a great place both physically & mentally and looking forward to fighting soon.
He's a really top lad and I wish him luck, I look forward to seeing him return soon.

Yes mate, a good while ago, he speaks very highly of Brendan and has clearly lots of affection for him, Which you can see when he speaks about him, he said Brendan still is in regular contact with him and rings him to see how trainings going.

That's great to read. I've met Richard and he's a true gent, humble and hard working. I was really disappointed with his performance against Browne because I thought he'd give him a better fight than that. Maybe he had other matters on his mind outside the ring?
Any idea when he is aiming to be back?

Towers seems to get a bit of a hard time on this forum sometimes, yes it went wrong against Browne. I just think he got in the wrong mindset from the get go in that one. If he went in with the right attitude he might not of won, but wouldn't of froze up so much.
But before that he had given us some entertaining fights, he might never be a top level heavyweight, but he trains hard and can with the right matches get to the British title fight.
I've heard alot about Richard looking good in camp, and spars well. So maybe a bit of mind work is needed to get him to translate that to the actual fight night.

one of his problems was/is lack of activity at his age he needs to get on with it and take some risky fights and others to hone his craft.

Seems a decent fella but he's got no chin. It's a major issue at heavyweight.

That hits the nail on the head really. Good luck to him but he was in trouble loads of times against Gregory Tony, and had the wobbles to a shocking degree.

Towers is the type of guy who adds a lot of value to a training camp. A lot of ex-cons like squaddies, rig workers, ex-boarders and other institutionalised types are good company in spartan environements.

Richard is a great guy, really hard working, willing to learn & listen and give it is all.
IMO I think the problem before was he was fighting on natural instinct and never really taken to one side in a one on one basis and taught certain things unlike he his being done now with Adam Booth, you can see his eyes have really been opened to boxing and he genuinely looks to be coming on loads, so all the time and effort by both Adam & Richard seem to be paying off in the gym. I'm not sure when he will be back out but I guess he'll be back later in the year, maybe October/November time all being well.

Absolute nonsense. You wouldn't believe the time that Brendan Ingle has spent on him.

What about when he gets decked with a big overhand right or something ? He'll go back to fighting on instinct surely ? It's a great story and he comes across very well in interviews, but he's chinny.

I must admit I was cringing a bit reading Boxingcutsman's post. I'm sure it's unintentional but it does smack off "the Ingle's didn't do anything for him" which I'm sure Richard would disagree with wholeheartedly as nobody is that ungrateful.

Well I'm just going on conversations I've personally had with him in the gym and things he said, nothing Cringeworthy about my post.
I came on because I saw the title of the thread and had a read through, another poster asked the question about Richard and I wrote what I know to answer his question, like I say he speaks highly of Brendan, and never said Brendan hasn't done nothing for him, on the contrary, and has for nonsense, it could be, again I'm only going on conversations we had.

Good stuff. The more big, powerful heavies the better for me. I hope he's in the ring again soonest.

He should go back to pressing a hot iron on drug dealers; boxing is not for him.

Below the belt. It's easy to make cash selling crap. Towers is doing the right thing.

This may sound harsh and not trying to offend Ingle or Booth.
I think Ingle's training is suited to exceptional unique fighters who fight "differently" and who have the potential to be world class or are world class- bomber graham, witter, nas & rhodes to name a few - they had the tools/skills.
Richard Towers may benefit from a different trainer, more confidence, out of his "comfort zone" of the north - but then again has Ricky Burns benefitted from switching from the north to the south and changing trainers ??!! - no.
I think Towers may of relied on his strength/power too much on his win streak (fair play if it aint broke don't fix it)- Good luck to him if he turns it around, but if he's taking it seriously I would seriously rebuild and irrespective of rankings have a reality check gradually get confidence and skills up.
