Boxing News is pulling the plug on the Old Timers section. I rarely buy the mag now because everything in it is already in the public domain before it's published, however, now and again if I've got a long train journey and some loose change I will pick up a copy and I always flick straight to the Old Timers. It's a shame to lose it, IMO, but they know their market, I suppose.

its a shame, but the guy who writes it just babbles on like we know who all the people are talking about people who won a area strap in the 60's. his writing still is quite poor also.

I always used to skip old timers when I was young, as I didn't know who a lot of them were!

But as I've got older I always imagined what it would be like when I remembered all the fighters in that section and could get nostalgic.

I may be completely off the mark here but I had the idea that the only people who still bought magazines were older people? Please could someone in the business enlighten me?

I agree that the older generations are more likely to stick to 'old media' but BN has clearly been going for the younger reader - ipad interactive edition, twitter quotes, magazine design.

I imagine they did their market research on their customer base. From personal experience, I don't now any over 40s who buy boxing news. It seems to be younger folk

I stopped buying bn a few years back - you can get all u need on boxrec

Shame i for one like the Old Timers section, i would like to see the last of Jack Obermayer's reports though, i can't get on with his writing style.

I want it back how it used to be in the 80's, black and white, cheap paper and it was the trade paper. There's too much of the budget going on glossy paper and colour photos, they aren't needed, we can all go online. They should keep oldtimers, they used to have full page write ups on boxers from the 40's in the 90's, it made the sport more interesting to read up on it's heritage and some of the less well known boxers had some real stories and were good personalities.
