Fury deadlift on Ringside

Watching Ringside tonight with the Fury segment and it showed him doing a deadlift. I calculated that the weight was 230kg on the assumption the plates on each side were 2 x 25kg, 2 x 20, 1 x 10, 1 x 5kg = 105kg x two sides plus the bar which is 20kg

Now he struggled to pull that up and I appreciate he is not a weight lifter or power lifter but come on, that is pretty poor.

I can do 220kg and I am not a power lifter either oh and I am 5ft 7" and weighed just under 11st when I lifted that last year and I am 40 years old!

And the pussy used straps to assist his grip!!

Anyway, who do you guys have winning the fight?

I don't know who's kidding who here, but if you're talking about 230 KILOGRAMS which equates to over 500 pounds in real money, that is a big lift which is twice his body weight.

You also wonder about the stupidity of allowing him to do such a feat with the risk of injury that this carried. Just plain daft.

OP: If your deadlift is true you would be one of the strongest powerlifters around for your weight. That's the equivalent of more than 3 times your bodyweight.

That's a very good weight taller you are harder a deadlift is usually shorter stocky guys find it easier and that's not a poor weight for any man especially one not carrying a great deal of muscle

Saw the Fury before the bell thing on BN - surprised at how poor it was compared to the Haye Chisora Beyond the ropes they did (same production company - input media). Anyway on that, Fury appears to be doing a lot of typical weights in the gym (things that are not relevant or in some cases bad for boxing). I was surprised by that. Tricep extensions for example do very little for a boxer.

Interesting. Most studies I've seen demonstrate that triceps extensions are a very decent prehabilitation exercise for people who put a lot of stress on the elbow joint. Please could you provide a link, or links, that show otherwse? Cheers.

i watched the show and grimiced at the difficulty he showed in moving weights that a fat novice would have no problem shifting! if he thinks he is going to bully chisora around the ring after that show then he has another thing coming!!

Did nobody do physics at school? Levers? Strength? The guy is 6'9" and his wingspan is well over 7'. A lot of people are thicker than I give them credit for.

There is sod all wrong with lifting 230kg. Unless your a power lifter it's all about the tekkers.

I don't make any claims to be a great deadlifter, it's just a lift I enjoy because it's a good indicator of true strength. I'm just shy of 5'9" and 11.5 stone (atm) I last did my 1RM at 140kg. For a guy who is a foot taller than me, and almost twice the weight of me, 230kg is a very respectable weight. It's harder to deadlift when you're taller anyway. I know this from trying to deadlift using the same weight with smaller plates.

Is an impressive 1RM deadlift useful in boxing anyway?

There was a video up ages ago of Fury doing his 1RM deadlift and his technique was awful

Here you go I found it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbwLXQQ46HY

As a PT I'd have something to say about my client doing that in the gym. He lifts that with the opposite of a neutral spine. He should take some weight off :TU:

I don't think 1RM is needed for any boxer. You want power and speed so best to lower the weights and be more explosive. That would be the best way to increase punching power.. A lot of grip work and forearms will help strengthen these areas with speed and power...

You just don't know what exercise he had done prior to that rep. U could take literally a three second clip of anyone's training and make them look poor. Chisora fornicating about with resistance bands etc. ultimately, he's a boxer, not a power lifter.

He's a boxer not a weight lifter

I have no knowledge of weightlifting but even I know the best ones are short and stocky

It's impressive lifting as generally people with long levers struggle with such lifts. The classic example of the short guy being better at such lifts would be Arnold Schwarzenegger and his smaller bodybuilding friend, Franco Columbo. Franco being a demon 800 pound lifter in the deadlift.

A lot of soap boxes in this thread.

'Do you even lift, bro?'

Will he be strong enough to lift that world title above his head is the real question.

Luckily for Fury, weight lifters, bodybuilders, power lifters usually make for terrible boxers!

Poor deadlift technique or not, he'll beat Del Boy with plenty to spare.
