I love Lloyd Honeyghan. I still remember when he beat Curry. This was pre internet etc so sometimes had to wait a long time for results from the US but I heard the result of that fight within hours. He went to school with my cousin in Bermondsey & I knew plenty around SE London who claimed to be related to him.

I met him as well & he was a chilled out bloke (although I was charlied up at the time so pretty much everyone was chilled out).

What's your view on the start of the 2nd round in his bout with Bumphus? Fair? Not fair? I'd call it cheeky but once the bell rings etc etc.

To this day Johnny claims he was hit before the bell rang & that's the reason he turned to crack cocaine. Well that & Jimmy Carter not letting him fight at the Moscow Olympics.

Lloyd was a bad man at that that stage. They didn't mess about.

What sort of Charlie were you on that made everyone chilled out? The gear today seems to turn young blokes into obnoxious pricks who stand with their arms out wide goading others to kick off.

Think it was against Hatcher rather than Bumphus where in the post-fight interview he uttered the classic line: "I don't get paid for no overtime Harry!"

I was on some fantastic stuff I was getting in St Maarten. When I was manic, everyone else was chilled out. They could have been highly strung in reality but to me they were chilled out ;;-)

What is Lloyd up to these days, I have a photo of him and my son a few years ago when my lad was in the army boxing team, ill fish it out and post it. Lloyd looks like a right spiv!

It was brutal, but Johnny looked like he was walking on his heels on the way to the ring, I think his legs had already gone and Duva knew it ( seem to recall part of his pre fight training involved meditation) but was getting him a last decent pay day.

He seemed to shrink during the stare down - Lloyd was an animal that night, he had a Tyson like aura about him, and Johnny knew he was beat even before the first bell.

Great line and it sums the situation up, the bell had rung, he was off his stool and Lloyd chinned him. It's the referee's fault for not being ready when he's supposed to be. Shame Honeyghan's hands went, I'm struggling to think of a fighter who went from absolute in form beast to almost completely shot so quickly.

I don't think his hands were necessarily the problem. As he's admitted himself, his lifestyle outside fighting was far from ideal and he himself said numerous times that Hatton's blowing up between fights is dangerous as he knew from first hand experience.

I remember Duff saying that when Honeyghan was in the gym he was the hardest trainer there, he also said there's nothing in our contract that says we have to like each other!

I dare say Honeyghan enjoyed the lifestyle between fights, but he must of got women throwing themselves at him.

Honeyghan's brief run was full of excitement

Honeygan's skills definitely regressed as his reign went on. head movement especially. more prone to throwing single wild shots, etc.

Interesting vid of Honeyghan v Gilpin, the 1st fight, shows lloyd getting off the floor in the 2nd round. Lloyd had a great chin as well. But then so did Gilpin

His footware was more memorable than his performance.

He is a pal of mine, one of life's genuinely nice blokes, flattened Glenn Catley too

Carlo's record of 11-11 doesn't really do him justice. A strong dangerous boxer in his day, had some good wins along the way.

Lloyd was one of the first fighters I really began to watch as a kid and really follow.....

......and the Bumphus fight was definitely a classic; a British fighter doing the swaggering and putting the heat on an American opponent for a change. Bumphus was the bunny in the headlights and his team didn't like it, but Lloyd was just about legal.

The return fight was Vaca to regain the title from Jorge was a classic as well; not the same mugging Lloyd put on Bumphus but still a real take-down against a far harder character than Johnny. Vaca was a properly tough SOB.

I still think Lloyd got a bit carried away with that style (which was not his best option) and should have adapted things for Breland and Starling, who effectively wrecked him, but it was bloody good stuff whilst it lasted.

just watched it - the bell sounds, the second round starts and very soon after a punch is thrown by Lloyd that decks the slow witted bumphus. nothing wrong at all...except for the refereeing
