The extension of a power punch isn't going to effect its power a ton since the power is being generated by the kinetic chain before it even gets to the arm; this is most true of hooks and uppercuts. In the case of arm punches, there will be more power if you connect at a later point of the extension than at an earlier point. This stops being so true at the full extension of the arm, since you begin decelerating straight punches at full extension to avoid hyperextension of the elbow.

Without being pedantic, the most damaging punch is not the one with the most generated kinetic energy. That may be the most powerful but it's the punch the opponent doesn't see that makes it the most "damaging."

you are not losing power on longer punches, however you are often better prepared. the most damaging punches are those you don't see coming.

I agree shorter punches in relation to target distance. Joe Louis for example would aim his punches a foot the other side of his opponents head!!! The way it should be done. Joe Louis was the most lethal knockout puncher/finisher along with Tyson in Heavyweight history.

no 2 punches are the same, but the one that tends to make me cringe or screw my face is usually an uppercut. I think with a hook or a cross there is a quick exit for follow through momentum, but with an uppercut it just keeps going through the face and up to the brain.

An underrated punch that I love, and Joe Louis threw a lot, is the straight right to the body or ribs. Most fighters just hook to the body, but Joe Louis started the punch as though it was going to be a straight right to the chin and he'd throw it downstairs. The opponent, see Louis-Schmeling 2, braces for a shot to the chin with the body unprotected.

Straight jabs to the body are also underrated. While not a power punch, it throws your opponent off balance.

Also punching arms is effective even though not considered a "scoring" punch. Leon Spinks had the answer for the Ali rope-a-dope by hitting arms and weakening Ali's offense in the process.

If Foreman had hit Ali's arms black and blue instead of missing with wild shots perhaps the Rumble In The Jungle may have had a different outcome.

I agree. When I boxed I was taught to punch through the opponent, as if the real target was behind the opponents head or body. I would go into fights and sparring g sessions literally trying to take the other man's head off and it always worked.

I used to punch through my opponent and it always worked, straight through em.

I shrunk them and put them on a necklace. what I meant is that it always worked at making them effective punches

For a minute I thought this thread concerned the most 'painful' or 'damaging' punch in a boxer's arsenal.

From alot of trainers and boxers that I have talked to, they tell me a punch to the floating rib is about the most painful punch one can experience in sparring or in an actual contest. Of course, I've heard one of the most effective punches is a hook to the ear, or behind the ear, because it robs the opponent of equilibrium.

The sorest punch I've ever been hit with was right on the ear, burst my eardrum and was almost floored dizzy as hell. I still get tinnitus and the odd dizzy spell and it happened 20 years ago. Second worst was a bodyshot below the ribs in an amateur bout. Took a second to register it but it went through me like a shockwave two completely different types of pain though.

I know the feeling. I took a shot in the liver once. My brain immediately was like "that's where my liver is...well this isn't so bad" and then instantly felt like I was gonna crap my pants. Felt a painful warmth through my whole body. Very interesting form of pain.
