Wilder v Gavern

It looks like this is going ahead.

This is a MUCH better match-up than Sheppard and appears to me to be an actual "keep busy" fight rather than an embarrassment. Gavern, while no McCall/Welliver, has a better chin than Sheppard and fought Banks to a 12 round draw. He also beat Ding-a-ling man, who some had put forward as a good challenger, by KO - the first man ever to do that.

The chance of an update are slim but Gavern should provide a few rounds at least.

I see Gavern going more then one round with Wilder, good choice for stay busy fight.

I hope so, Mansour and Lucas Browne both made short work of him, though.

He's definitely a better opponent, but his fight with Banks happened four years ago and look at his record since. He's hardly the live underdog he once was, and he's shown increasingly less durability.

I expect Wilder to follow in Mansour and Brown's shoes and stop Gavern early.

Same. This is better than Sheppard, but still not good as the 32nd fight for someone considered a top contender.

Better than Sheppard, but still the weakest opponent Wilder's fought in a while, and that's saying a lot.

Better than Shephard. Still not a good choice though. Gavern may knock him out and Gavern is not a sure fire pick to go rounds. Chauncy Welliver is the guy they should have gotten. As there is no way Wilder would spark him and would have to go rounds that he's never gone. And while Welliver would probably still knock him out late, it would take an accumulation to put him away. Gavern is probably going down in the 1st 3 rounds unless he lands something big early in which case Wilder will likely be taken out on a stretcher. The guys just doesn't have any punch resistance.

Charlie Zelenoff is 160 pounds and he sent Wilder flying and only the ropes kept him up. In this video here the 400 pounder Dustin Nichols also puts Wilder down and the ref rules a clear knock down a slip. Then Nichols magically quits at the end of the round. Wilder cannot take a punch! 2 guys with a combined 4-10 pro record have floored him. Neither guy ever beat another boxer with a pro win. This guy is somehow getting a title shot when he cannot even handle the bottom of the barrel in boxing. The biggest hype job ever. He's barely fit to be a bouncer at a titty bar.

Your love of Chauncey borders on the insane.I like Chauncey he is a tough durable journeyman.
But he is not and never will be a contender.

In 2012, Gavern got knocked-out three times, to follow-up his end of 2011 fight where he got knocked out, and then rung-in 2013 by getting knocked out in the first round. So he seems to bring a lot of durability to the table...

He is nowhere near as bad as Mike Sheppard, though. That's for certain. I can't complain way too much, considering that he's such a late replacement. I just hate the fact that people act like Wilder's the conqueror of the division and he's about to fight a guy with 16 losses, 7 losses by KO, and who is ranked outside of boxrec's top 100. I dread reading all of the Wilder hype threads that are going to be on here after he beats this journeyman. "OMG, KO1, WILDER IS THE BEST HEAVYWEIGHT IN THE WORLD. KNOCKING OUT A JOURNEYMAN WHO HAS BEEN KNOCKED OUT BY 7 OTHER PEOPLE QUALIFIES YOU TO BE THE #1 HEAVYWEIGHT IN THE WORLD." Please kill me now.

Gavern was a decent gatekeeper a few years back but the ugly Prizefighter win notwithstanding, his performances have gone downhill along with his durability. He won't last any longer than Firtha did . .if that.

Another over-matched opponent in Gavern, though I really hope he can somehow take Wilder into deeper waters. It would be nice to see another side of Wilder.

Wilder did call out Dan Rafael on twitter. If he could withstand fat Dans Butterbean like power could it be among Wilders top five wins?

And the circus continues.

Gavern is durable (can take lots of punishment) and can surprise with some decent shots... He had some upsets here and there but lately, he has been more chinny than usual

A lot of these guys like Gavern make make a good fight when they have time to train for it, but unless Gavern was already in training he only had a little over a week to get ready for this.
Bad move putting this on the Porter-Brooke undercard btw. They should have pitched it as a co-feature on FNF, or something. I highly doubt we will see more than a quick 10 sec. highlight clip on Showtime.
WBC #1 guy, and no TV?
Not confident enough in your guy to get him a TV approved opponent? Sad.

Are you Central time zone?

Never mind, it's 7PM here too. EST. Kudos for Wilder taking this fight. Gavern's not the most dangerous guy in the world, but there is a lot worse he could have chosen from.

Well, I will argue that Gavern is better than that one turd who went 4-5 rounds with Wilder, and even rocked Deontay once or twice (Firtha). But, I will say this--- Wilder is winning this one fast and by kayo.

If this gets out of the first I will be surprised. There is a reason why the team that takes the path of least resistance chose Gavern. I'm sure they could have gotten Maddalone or Mollo at least...but I think there is a reason they didn't go that route.

Gavern is a pretty decent opponent considering what is at stake for Wilder with a title shot a few months away. Any fight is risky as far as injury, but it would be really stupid for him to take on an upper ranked guy with Stiverne hopefully next. There are better and worse opponents to choose from, but I would say his team made a good choice.

Dan Rafael finally got something right: It's not necessarily this stay busy fight that sucks...it's his previous 30 some stay busy fights.

Yeah, Gavern is pretty close to the level of opposition Wilder has faced in his last 1/2 dozen fights or so.

Jason's been ko'd in 5 of his last 8 losses. He's getting ktfo, no question. If he makes it 3 full rounds, my opinion of him will probably rise.
