i made a post a few years ago and now its gone...boo hoo....anyways a few months ago he grocery store stopped carrying RING magazine

no more KO mag, no more Boxing Encyclopedia, no more Boxing Digest and some of the others....what the hell is this world coming to?

I haven't seen Ring at my local supermarkets for most of this year. It used to be sold at Walmart, where I could sit on the floor and peruse it for a couple hours, but now WM has also stopped selling it.

I wondered if the politically correct were uneasy with stores selling a magazine celebrating a "blood sport" and began exerting pressure to have it removed.
But as you said, there's no shortage of MMA rags taking up space.

If I see one of those magazine distributors stocking the racks, I'll ask what the hell happened to Ring, a staple of American journalism since 1922.

Ring became extortionate, at least in the UK. Something like £5 (about $7.5) and it was a month out of date when it hit the shelves over here. Added to the fact that boxing fans tend to know what is in the magazines before they go to print anyway. The internet is killing print journalism IMO but in some ways I like the idea of out the with the old and in with the new.

I don't know if Ring is worth the nearly $10 it goes for here (when the hell did magazines ever get that expensive? You used to be able to buy a hardback for that amount) but I miss it greatly.
Sure it was more than a month behind in lag time, but I remember back in the 60s and 70s when it was more like 4 months before details of a fight appeared in it.
But it didn't matter, because it was Ring Magazine, and a fight wasn't officially over until news of it appeared on its iconic pages.

Idk why anyone buys magazines today, in particular about sports. The news is outdated as f#ck first off. Plus they charge insane prices for them. Last time I looked @ a boxing mag @ a store it was double digits ffs & it had a cover pic hyping two fighters about to fight that I saw fight two weeks ago & already knew the result of. Selling paper with words on it seems like some outdated sh!t to me in general though.

I was a huge boxing magazine fan back in the day. Used to love KO with the centerfold pics with the fighters records on it. Had a wall full of fighters, Jorge Paez, Meldrick Taylor, Pernell Whitaker, etc., when I was a kid & used to write down the fight records & keep them up to date when the guy fought from then on cuz that wasn't available anywhere else at the time that I knew of (I discovered the Ralph Citro record books a few years later).

Ring costs $10.10 here in Canada, I still buy most issues as I collect the magazine to get signed by the fighters (whomever is on the cover). As for the articles and print itself, like any other magazine its 1-2 months dated but I still like flipping through and holding something in my hand rather than viewing online. Something about a magazine or a book you just can't replace online.

I don't think I'd want to hold on to any website fight reviews for very long, but my boxing magazine collection goes back to the 60s.
Nice to sit around and go thru the dog-eared yellowing pages.

It's not just boxing mags, print in general is a dying medium.
