Very colourful and controversial figure. Full of energy and ideas. Been in trouble with the law, but in my opinion a great promoter and PR man. One of, if not, the best.

If I could trust him, he would have been one promoter I would have loved to have worked with.

I reckon the game needs people like him.

I last read about him when he got a long sentence for trying to rip off several banks.

I'm pretty sure he ended up getting a bit of time for something or other. I never heard much after that. I'll see if i can find out.

It was 21 months, and that was in late 2002. He propbably did 10 months and got out late last year.

Cheers, Flawed genius. I seem to remember Mendy was working with a group of people in trying to con large loans out of banks by creating false identities.
I couldn't help thinking at the time Mendy had drawn inspiration from Harold Smith.

Blimey, I thought he had sorted himself out. He got done for a similar thing in 1991, and in the late 70's / early 80's he got a six year sentence.

Wasnt allegedly Mendy's best man?

I seem to recall that they worked together in the early days in Bloomsbury Square.

He seemed to have a fascinating relationship with Warren. Warren claimed in later years that he hardly knew Mendy. Strange seeing as he was his best man.

Do you guys know any more, If I had the time I would write a book on him.

AMBROSE MENDY SENTENCED
At Southwark Crown court, Monday 24 March, Ambrose Mendy was sentenced to six months imprisonment for a burglary committed on 31 July 2001. Mendy's sentence will run consecutively to a further sentence handed down in November 2002.

On 31 July 2001, an alarm was activated at a multi-occupied premises at 110 Fenchurch Street. City of London police attended and found Mr Mendy on the floor where the alarm had been set off. He told officers he worked in the building, but on reaching the ground floor reception area with the officers, he made off.

Mr Mendy led police on a chase through Fenchurch Street, discarding a bag as he ran. He entered City Flogger public house and exited through 120 Fenchurch Street, dropping a hat on the floor as he left the building.

Police did not apprehend Mr Mendy but officers seized the bag and hat he dropped. A DNA sample taken from the hat matched that of Mr Mendy. A telephone found in the discarded bag had text messages linking Mendy to the telephone.

He pleaded not guilty to the burglary, claiming he was out of the country at the time. Officers were able to ascertain that credit cards had been used by Mrs Mendy in this country during the period in which it was claimed the couple were in the Gambia."

The identity theft/bank fraud was worth about 1 million. Like bennie says there was a good few of them involved.

Anyone who lives in the Wanstead area of London might see him knocking about (if he's out) as far as I know that's where he lives.

It seems clear that Mendy is a man who just cannot resist a hustle, no matter how successful he becomes as a 'legit' businessman, it's the thrill of the hustle which really gets him going. Very common amongst people who came up through street smarts.

He once said: "There's only one thing worse than being skint, and that's looking skint." He was brought up in poverty and that seems to govern his adult actions.
I well remember when he came to my neck of the woods in 1990 with one of his fighters (Ray Webb, who bust Michael Watson's nose in sparring and cost him a big fight I seem to remember). Mendy was a business advisor to his fighters and held no Board licence. He used to hate the fact he wasn't allowed in his fighter's corners, but this was a pokey dinner show in Telford and Mendy felt confident enough to go for it. I could see the Board officials squirming but none of them had the balls to remove him. But there was a price to pay. Within a few days, the promoters of the Telford show were carpetted and in fact never promoted again. Their American travel business (Ace Travel, who you may remember used to organise trips to the big fights in the States) also suffered.
Mendy was bad news.

last i heard Ambrose was in HMP Brixton.....
seems he cannot stay away from Fraudulant activities....

Maloney used to work with Mendy, not sure about the other Frank.
Warren did have a funny story to tell though.
Apparently, he met up with Mendy at a business lunch, and there were some coffee beans in a dish on the table, as part of the decoration.
Ambrose picked up a few and popped them in his mouth, obviously thinking they were mints or something.
An amazed Warren waited for his reaction, but Mendy just crunched away and swallowed them....without batting an eye lid.
Obviously too cool to ever admit he'd made a slight mistake

Mendy and trouble went hand in hand. He was essentially a con man. Had all the charm and chat, but was just looking to fleece people for all they had. Mickey Duff branded him "a criminal" but what irked me, was he knew absolutely nothing about boxing. For example, he took over the reins of Richie Wenton in 1989, who was unbeaten and looking the business. Mendy gave him all the chat about putting him on in the States on Nigel Benn shows - and he did. Mendy put him on in Atlantic City on the Nigel Benn-Doug DeWitt show. Trouble is, Mendy put him in with....Sharmba Mitchell.
