Kell Brook - Andre Ward

Why is it when Ward fights like Brook fought last night that he's admonished for it and the ref criticized for allowing it, but when Brook does it is generally overlooked here?

Discuss.

Do people like watching a young man like Brook fight in a manner of a 50 yr old Hopkins?

Idk that anyone is saying it was a fun to watch fight. Don't know that anyone is sh!tting too much on how Kell won it, but it wasn't like people were sh!tting on Andre after he won his first title with his less than pleasing style either. If Kell gets further along & keeps doing this less than pleasing style he did last night into a few title defenses I don't think he'll be given any less mercy than Andre or Bhop get.

Because most people thought Brook did not stand a chance and like a feel good underdog story even if it is not aesthetically pleasing.

But that's not brooks style that's how he was forced to fight to win being the difference that's the way ward likes to fight kell would struggle to find an opponent and being in that type of fight again he's more of a boxer who likes his jab he doesn't want to be mauling and holding it's not him at his best

Come on mate, the Hopkins comparison is a bit of an exaggeration! I'd say he did hold a lot at times but I feel it was mostly because Porter was jumping in and using his head a lot, which Kell was naturally wary of.

It wasn't a classic fight but I think there were enough good shots landing by both to make it reasonably entertaining for the neutrals. As an Englishman however, I was screaming at the tv and really enjoyed the fight - seeing an English fighter win in the US is something of a rarity in recent times!

Brook v Khan will surely be made now, Khan seemed quite up for it during the Sky broadcast, who do you think wins that?

Exactly, that's just the way to beat Porter, but diddy is just looking sh1t on Brook again.

Poor Diddy.... just can't come to terms with the fact the latest American hype job has been beaten.

Reminds me of Lacy/Calzaghe, in the sense if you spoke to an American beforehand Lacy couldn't be beaten either. Too strong, too aggressive, punches too hard.... Calzaghe just slaps, never fought someone of Lacy's level before, going to be badly beaten up....

*ahem*

Yeah man, Britain has sooo many better fighters than the US. Like totally! Not to mention about .005% of the best American athletes even bother with boxing.

I dont want to get into a UK vs USA silly childish debate but to be fair, you guys have about 6 times the population of us. I'd hope you had more top athletes. Would be something wrong if you didnt.

Dude. Please. Britain could have 10x the population of the US and would still have about 2 players in the entire NBA and NFL.

Gridiron and basketball aren't popular sports in the UK. I doubt the US has even any county level cricketers?!

Of course not. That sport is stupid. It's an insult to even call it a sport. What skill does it take to do that? Is Curling also big across the pond?

Are you insinuating that if basketball or American football WAS big over there that there would be a slew of Brits playing basketball at the highest level or in the nfl? Don't make me laugh. Only the best of the best athletes in the world can play in these high level athletic sports. Brits, by and large, are not big, strong, fast physical freaks of nature. This is just reality.

You have to be the single stupidest poster this site has ever had. I genuinely thought you'd hit rock bottom a long time ago but I actually laughed so hard at this. Bravo, sir. Bravo.

Good effort but a bit too obvious with the trolling this time.

You're using the examples of the NBA and the NFL for brits not being great athletes even know hardly any people over here grow up playing those sports in any kind of serious, competitive realm. It's like using the example how many top US football (Soccer) players there are. Not that many for the exact same reason.

Answer the question.

If Brits grew up playing basketball and American football would they be populating the NFL and NBA?

I just want to hear your answer.

Then you can tell me how stupid I am (for telling the truth).

I think there would be a decent few here and there. Would be as many top guys as you guys have? No but again the population aspect is a big part of that.

Generations of Americans have grown up playing soccer, how many play in the best leagues in the world? Why is that? Because your best athletes go into the more popular sports. If we had been playing those sports the same length as time as you have and they were our top sports there would be British players in both leagues, yes.

Any level if coaching available for either sport here is so limited.

The correct answer is:

More money would be spent into supplementing those sports if the higher ups responsible for funding these sports believed it would be a fruitful venture. Bottom line is Brits, by and large, are too small to play basketball at any reasonable level and the ones that do have height are not coordinated enough to play it at the elite levels. So no money is put into the sport. Which is the way it should be. Just be honest with yourselves because you're not being honest here.

88% of Britain is WHITE. There's your simplified debate.

Everytime the NBA holds an event at the London 02 arena - it sells out.

That's your argument? Christ.

Care to explain the lack of talent in American soccer players then? Given the disparity in levels of funding to NBA and US football here.

As much if not more skill than baseball. Sometimes it's best not to attack what you don't understand, especially if the appearance of intelligence is a goal.

You think poor inner city kids (which populate much of the NBA and NFL) are playing friggin soccer as kids?

Trust me. They aren't.

Diddly doesn't care about appearing intelligent, he just likes to attack from a sense of inferiority. Where that comes from is the mystery, I think a Brit might have nicked his wife.

We'll obviously those overseas will overlook Brook's obsessive holding, I thought initially that Kell was a little nervous which may have lead to the initial holding but throughout the fight he routinely held and although he was warned he was never penalized for it. Later it appeared in the fight that he did make a little adjustments as he got comfortable/confident and began to counter a little on the inside before slightly holding so I didn't see it as much of a problem as I did in the first 6 or 7 rounds.

Hats off to Brook, it was a very close fight, he landed the cleaner blows and appeared to win it though I didn't believe the judges gave enough credit to Porter for the bodypunching he did.

But funding for the UK basketball team was cut 100%.
One event doesn't make a (or anywhere near to a) mainstream sport.
