Froch and Naz: A contrast of manners

Just been watching some of Carl's and Naz's fights and interviews on youtube and what impresses me about Froch is how he remembers to thank those who have helped him and train him etc.

Naz, by contrast, never really gave Brendan, the Ingles and his gymmates the credit for the work they put into him and his career.

In particular, the Steve Robinson fight (where Naz was totally brilliant) irkes me because, in the post fight interview, Naz has to be prompted to thank Brendan, and then does so in the most glib and insincere manner.

fair point. I'd say most boxers are pretty quick to thank the people around them, as a rule.

Yep, Naz was incredibly arrogant which ultimately led to his downfall - he thought he could do it all himself & even thought he could compete at elite level without going through a proper training camp.

Luckily Barrera was there to show him the error of his ways :OhYes:

you ignite an old but good debate there: Naz fully-focussed and properly-trained, does he beat barrerra?

No. Or JMM or Morales.

No. But without Junior Jones, Barrera don't beat Naz.

I think Naz, a few years earlier, would have bested Barrera (who was a superb fighter). By the time they boxed, Naz had slowed down considerably and had stopped throwing combinations or creating chances.

Yes. Well he definitely gives him a better run for his money than his actual effort. But let's not go there hey; done to death! :TU:

Yes shame about his attitude which, as others have mentioned, was his downfall. I for one didn't mind his cocky attitude. Nas has admitted his behaviour was completely tongue in cheek, purely for entertainment purposes and he "felt bad when saying it". However, once he fell in love with his power and started throwing one punch at a time and headhunting, it was the begginning of the end.
Also, putting his family in charge, who knew diddly squat about boxing, over the Ingles was a big mistake.

True about naz but lets be clear he was a much greater talent than Froch.

For sure. Yet another example of how talent can only take you so far in the sport and without the discipline as well you'll come a cropper.

Froch isn't the fastest guy, the hardest puncher or the slickest boxer. But he's dedicated himself to his craft, maximized his talent and will go down as one our finest.

Naz will always be a "could of been" type boxer, despite having a fine career.

I hope not because (and I don't know the man) Barrera seems to show the properties of greatness. Bravery, dedication to reach his personal pinnacle, humility, magnanimity. Whereas as Naz used to embody the total opposite - gaudyness, arrogance, rudeness, contempt, ignorance. And that was before he got picked up from jail in a stretch Limo with the music blaring.

Standing by all of that ^^^^ there's an interview kicking about on Youtube, one hour chat type of thing, where he came over like a humble, decent man. He's not the horrible a person as he used to behave imo.

That as an act; he's said as much. It's the character he potrayed as much as his skills that banked him the £34 million he made in his career.

He brought a whole hostr of casuals into the sport; even girls I knew would want to watch Naz because "he's funny".

:TU: as his career has progressed i've become ever more impressed by Froch's boxing brain (despite appearances i think he's probably as in-ring intelligent as almost anyone out there)

I'm sure Joe Louis once said that all elite fighters are just as arrogant as each other, some just display it more than others. :TU:

I've told the Naz story before about him taking a cancer stricken young lad under his wing in Mansfield, even offering to fly him over to NYC with Row A seats - but the lad was too ill to go. Later when he passed away, Naz was pall bearer of his coffin and gave a long speech in the church about the lad, despite only knowing him about 9 months or so. He'd even drive down in his Ferrari to sit with him in the hospital. Later he became a patron saint of a children's cancer charity.

Then on other times he smashes a guy to bits in his car, drives off and ends up being sent down for it - and comes out to a gaudy stretch limo and champagne reception, despite the other man's life being truly ruined by his injuries.

Naz is a very mixed bag of behaving extremely nice or extremely arrogant.

Named hit the big time very young and had not matured, he was full of himself and thought he was chocolate.

Froch didn't turn pro until he was a mature man and hit the big time after suffering losses; that makes a difference surely to how someone comes across?

aye, x2. i actually chose, as a big Naz fan from the Belcastro fight on, not to watch the MAB fight live. was pretty sure how it was going to go, and that I'd find it painful viewing

What bollox, he comes across what he is, a total cock.

So it was an act that he did for his career? Then why does he still talk like a dickhead in interviews ringside now when there is no financial gain for his career anymore?

I have a friend who was a pro heavyweight and worked with Ingles and is well known on the Sheffield scene and he told me stories of what a penis Hamed was and how he himself gave Hamed a slap once when he was giving it the Billy Bollox at the gym. Apparently they said basically, "You can do that shit out there for the cameras, but not here in the gym", he told my mate to eff off and he open hand slapped him the gobby little idiot.

I do not care one per cent how successful someone is in their chosen field, we are all created equal and when the undertaker lays our body out on the slab we are all equal again so no need to act better than others as you aren't, you may just be better at one thing which on the grand scheme of it is something insignificant.

Sh it like that, can't go unnoticed.

The version of Naz before the Barrera fight was totally odious, 100 per cent vile.

I remember watching a documentary on the build-up and there was this constant, self-satisfied smirk, an absurd entourage who he treated with disdain and an attitude towards Barrera that was wholly disrespectful....and ultimately very, very dull. It went well beyond just being young, self-confident and exuberant. I watched the fight just in the hope that Barrera would burst the pompous bubble.....and I am pretty sure that I was not alone.

But perhaps that was the plan? Naz and Eubank, despite their various spats, both seemed to have the same approach to projecting their careers; controversial, arrogant behaviour gets the casual sports fan involved and puts money in the bank.

Toby; when the undertaker lays my body out on a slab he'll know that we're not all created equal and he'll be a very bitter man from that day on.
