Calzaghe in trouble?

by Goz
Just heard on Radio 5 news that Calzaghe has been nicked for a disturbance or something or other. Not good with weeks to go until potentially the toughest fight of your career.
Coupled with the marraige breakup and the quality and determination of Glencoffee Johnson might make Goz have a few quid Mr Johnson.
I was trying to find a link on the BBC site but there is nothing up there yet. Did find this though

Calzaghe asking people to speak out about bullying, I wonder if some of his opponents are included?

Goz - I agree that Calzaghe's mental issues adjust the odds. Without them I would say Joe is about 1/3. If external factors make his oppo wider odds, then it is time to pile in

Exactly. Johnson is the sort of guy with whom you know what you will get too, he will be meticulously preparing somewhere low-key, oblivious to it all and has seen it all before. He'll be prepared in a couple of weeks time. With all this crap going on Calzghe is in danger.

James - noted. I will be putting a ton on Jonhson. My insticts are that he won't win, but you can get at least 3-1 on a fight that most people that know boxing see as 50-50.

yeah its worth a wager

although i never bet cos i'm sensible
as u say johnson is one of those fighters who is so reliable, he won't lay down and quit in front of any1 until its been beaten out of him over a long period.

Ooh. Looks like he's bottling his biggest challenge. The WBO culture is ingrained in him.

World champion boxer arrested
World champion boxer Joe Calzaghe was arrested following an incident at his home, police have confirmed.
The super-middleweight champion was taken to a police station on 27 May and released on bail following an allegation of threatening behaviour.
It is thought the incident involved a dispute with his estranged wife Mandy at his home in Cwmbran, south Wales.
The arrest comes weeks before Calzaghe, 32, moves up in weight to challenge for the world light-heavyweight title.
Gwent Police said Calzaghe was arrested and later released on police bail.
Inspector Michael Vaughan: "Gwent police can confirm that officers were called to an incident in the Cwmbran area on Thursday May 27.
"A man was arrested in connection with an allegation of threatening behaviour and has subsequently been released without charge on police bail pending further inquiries."
Calzaghe, who has held the World Boxing Organisation super-middleweight title since dethroning Chris Eubank in 1997, was awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list last year.
The Newbridge-based boxer has won all 37 of his professional bouts and defended his world title 14 times.
Calzaghe is due to fight Jamaican Glen Johnson for the International Boxing Federation light heavyweight title at Manchester's MEN Arena on 12 June in what is regarded as one of the biggest fights of his career.

This is poor preperation, and his mindset is going to be well out of sync. He must really think Glencoffe is going to be a walk in the park to be getting upto this sort of shite so close to a fight.

Stick your money on Johnson, while the odds are good.

Calzaghe will smash Johnson to bits, it's an easy fight. Don't let this sensationalised "trouble" blind you from the truth.

cobblers, better fighters than Joe have faced Johnson and scraped home.
This is not good news re Joe, always prided himself on being focussed.
Focussed on chasing fanny by the looks of it. Which would be hypercrcitical of me to slate but Im not a world champ and dont make my living fomr boxing.
I wonder if all the messing about with the date and now all this will impact.
Its not shaping up that well.

The only fighter better than Joe who has faced Johnson is Bernard Hopkins (Don't say Ottke), and that was SEVEN years ago at middleweight. Hopkins dominated him before stopping him in the 11th.
Clinton Woods is over-rated in this country, this masked the fact that Glencoffe is over the hill and essentially shot.
Joe will stop him and people will go totally overboard saying how fantasic Calzaghe's performance was.

I don't think anyone smashes Johnson around. He's a tough old goat. What is true, though, is that the momentum seems to be with Johnson, with the Woods fights, getting the payday and the recognition, first world title, etc, and Calzaghe's been stagnating for a while and evidently hasn't had the best of build-ups. Unless it's all a ruse.
Money on Johnson if the odds are 3-1, but I think this could go either way and I'd err on picking Calzaghe in a bookmaker-less world

Despite all the scrapes Joe seems to be getting into out of the ring I still pick him to beat Johnson. Glencoffe is unlucky in that he has won a 'title' when past his best..... he was knackered after 6 rounds in the secoond Woods fight and I just don't see him being able to cope with Calzaghes speed and pace........... all in all Johnsons style is made for Calzaghe.... had this fight been made 5 years ago it could be different but now I see only one winner and I wouldn't be surprised to see Joe win on a stoppage in the late rounds. I agree with Flawed genius that Joes camp have built up the danger of this fight against a very honourable but ringworn Johnson and will act like Joe is the secondcoming when he wins..... which is what he should do.

The only man who ever smashed Johnson to bits, and it was over 11 rounds, was Bernard Hopkins, who is technically in a different league to Joe, who relies on power punching.
I've said all along this is going to be a hard fight for Joe, and his extra-curricular activities like having barnies with his estranged wife, and running around nobbing big-tittied 22 year olds (34F I think they were, cor blimey what I could do with them puppies, but that's another story) is not the ideal preparation for a step up to a new weight against a very experienced, cagey, durable and let's not forget, hungry, opponent.
Glen has waited his whole career for a big score, and he's not about to just turn over when Calzaghe starts to turn up the heat. He's got a very good chin, and knows how to pace himself too, he's not a huge puncher, but he hits hard enough to get Joe's respect.
Tough and exciting fight is my prediction, with Calzaghe maybe getting a late stopapge, but no way does he turn Johnson over early.

I see the police were summoned via a 999 call from Joe's estranged wife (allegedly her). I thought it was quite pointed that Joe said he still loved Mandy when the split came to light in April. It seems that he's the one who's been left devastated.

by don't call it a comeback
Not ideal preparation but this sounds like a relatively minor incident. If he hadn't been Joe C he would probably have been moved on by the police as another domestic - there doesnt seem to be an allegation of violence or damage. It happens every single day in every postcode with couples who split up. A messy business for sure but I dont see why it should affect his performance in the ring. Its not like him and Mandy have been totally love's young dream for some time now.
If people pile into Johnson and move the odds I'll be buying Calzaghe like crazy because in my books he is still a red hot favourite for this fight.

Why should anyone feel sorry for Joe? From the sound of it he's the one who's been doing all the extracurricular shit.
But if Johnson winds up beating him, Joe can always look forward to consolement from his "bosom friend.."
