Richard 'The Best-Kept Secret' Williams

What does he do with his time these days? He seemed reasonably talented but looked over-the-hill once bigger fights came along.

Richard "The Secret" Williams is arguably the greatest fighter of the modern era. Quite possibly the closest thing we've had to a sugar Ray Robinson from these shores

Unfortunately there just aren't the fights to prove it.

I think it's because they all lost badly when they stepped up. And sadly when they did step up it was too late, all the procrastination had robbed them of their spark. Wayne Alexander's late notice job for the WBO title effectively ruined him. Williams looked like an old man against Martinez.

He put him on the floor twice in their first fight so he wasn't a million miles away from a win that night.

There was Gary Lockett too. I think Paul Samuels wasn't as highly regarded. Steve Roberts had a good run but he also wasn't regarded as one of the premier players. Michael Jones came later with Jamie Moore.

Sounds very similar to the whole Macklin, Barker, Lee, Murray, nonsense.

What a bad fighter Martinez turnt out to be!! He got on world stage very late aswell

Lockett already pointed out, throw Adrian Stone in as well. Truelly one of worst eras in British boxing history for fights not getting made. In addition to the light middles, Calzaghe was feasting on the Mcintyres and Pudwills of the world around this time and nobody knew if Warren would ever let Hatton in with the likes of Tyszu. It was a very frustrating time for fans in Britain.

Stone was briefly on the British scene, but again it was fleeting as Martinez showed him up as an old man as he did others.

Agree. Sometimes promoters need to just accept that this level of fighter isn't going to be involved in 'Big Money Fights Down The Line'.

Make the damn fights while there is domestic interest.

A good reason why Quigg/Frampton needs to happen. Not saying those two are domestic level, but jfc just make the fight while people are talking about it. Now!

Watched the Williams vs Martinez first fight last night on youtube, and it was incredibly strange watching the fight hearing Jim Watt telling the viewers repeatedly on TV how Williams should be beating this level of guy, nobody saw Martinez coming it seems. His style never really changed and after the first knockdown they almost dismissed him as getting knocked out sooner or later, when in hindsight i knew Martinez was dangerous as hell when hurt.

really enjoyable may i add, will definitely catch some more Williams fights when i get time.

Good post. It was also a time when Sky and certain promoters were conning gullible members of the public into thinking the WBU was a real belt.

Very true, in their mind Williams was meant to do a job on Martinez, it never entered their thoughts Martinez could be a world class fighter in the making.
