Matchroom -Business Decision ??

I started another thread entitled ' Boxing News Editors Office' a couple of days ago in which during a pretend conversation I implied that the magazine would not criticise the decision to make Bellew v Cleverley a PPV event because of the potential loss in revenue should Matchroom withdraw their advertising in protest. I've since been advised that I got it completely wrong because Matchroom haven't advertised in the Boxing News for some time. I've then looked out my Boxing News copies and it seems that after advertising regularly they seemed to have stopped around 1 May.
I find this very puzzling -why would a huge promoting outfit suddenly stop marketing their product in the trade magazine? I've no idea - is it just the case they thought that it was no longer worthwhile from a business point of view -did the rates for advertising suddenly rise steeply ?
Did anyone else notice this - I certainly didn't.
If anyone from Matchroom reads this, perhaps they might like to comment. This particular punter can't see the logic.

Maybe they decided that preaching to the converted was a waste of money?

Won't be long until there's an official "Matchroom Magazine " in my opinion.
Covering all sports etc. by magazine i mean ipad app andraoid app etc.
easy money spinner for them, and they get to coin in the money from there own sponsors.

I can see why they wouldn't bother, good money after bad, innit? Given their target audience would appear to be the man on the street that knows nothing about boxing, not anoraks.

I watched the IFL interview and Eddie said match room has around 80,000 followers on twitter and Eddie has around 100,000 followers, boxing news has 30k subscribers so between Eddie and match room they didn't really need to advertise in boxing news, or that's how I read it anyway, good interview

He said they did it as a favour to help BN out.

Not really comparing like for like is it, unless people pay to follow his Twitter account haha. BN has 1.1m likes on Facebook for example.

That's how I saw it, I got the impression Eddie was saying more or less what's the point? Even said he was only doing it to support a traditional magazine, I've got mine every week for about 15 years, I'm a big fan but I got the impression Eddie was saying it wasn't really worth while for him, I might be wrong but that's how I understood it

Give it time and his big announcements on Twitter will be PPV.

Oh no I believe that could well be what he meant, I'm just pointing out the flaws in his logic if so.

The whole purpose of advertising is to get your product out to as many people as possible. By avoiding placing adverts in the Boxing News you are potentially missing out on 10,000 plus customers. I don't see the sense in that approach.

Perhaps, but another way to look at it would be: what's the value of spending money advertising to the 10,000 people who are most likely to purchase the fight anyway?

Why sell to the converted and what have you.

I'm guessing, but I'd say the majority of Boxing News subscribers know when the fights are, and what channel they are on. Maybe Eddie didn't see the point in advertising to people who already knew what information he was trying to advertise.
Boxing is weird like that. The majority of advertising is aimed at casual fans. The Pay-Per-Views in particular. Most mainstream fans are going to tune in and watch every fight anyway, so not point in selling the fight to them. I bet about 50% of the people on this site who belly ache about Bellew and Cleverly being PPV end up buying it anyway. It's the people who only watch a handful of fights who need marketing too. The people who didn't know who Bellew and Cleverly were two months before the fight, who can be convinced it's a massive show. That's the sort of people who Hearn is marketing at. Not the people who buy specialist boxing magazines that are probably going to tune in anyway.

Yeah my thoughts exactly. I mean for Groves - Froch 2 all sorts of people were talking about the fight an went to it.
Ask those same people who Roy Jones Jnr is and they won't have an effin' clue.

X3 matchroom seem to want to monetise everything. In all seriousness I can see them charging for weigh in entry at some point.

Matchroom advertised the Battle Lines show in Leeds in Boxing Monthly this month. No idea why they didn't do the same in BN.

I think this is a good post. as curtis mentioned its all part of matchrooms business plan. boxing news is only read by real die hard boxing fans, this is because of the advent of the internet. there is absolutely NO NEW NEWS in boxing news. its all factual info that has been covered on line during the time it takes to prepare/print the publication. occasionally there is a good piece on boxing history but equally this is all available on the net if you dig.
personally i used to be a regular subscriber to boxing news, i looked forward to its letterbox appearance, had it in my bag at work etc etc. In this day and age i might just buy one if i am taking a flight......but mainly because i cannot get on line on the plane, plus it gives me something to do.
Its a great shame that we are about to lose our trade print, it surely cannot remain financially viable to produce a weekly quality shiner like BN, its surely only a matter of time until it becomes a monthly publication, and even then it will only manage to carry on for about another 4 years at most.
Its sad but its reality, because of the poor circulation figures i am presuming that advertising costs in BN have gone up, therefore the likes of matchroom dont want to lose the coins anymore, so therefore they dont advertise there.
the internet is a massive vehicle for advertising, the likes of twitter, instagram and facebook have literally millions of viewers that are eager and ready to absorb new facts, figures, results and info.

Some of the long converted are not going to buy this time, turning a profit is good but in this instance it just seems wrong and greedy.

Can't go into massive detail for obvious reasons. All I can say is that print circulation has stayed virtually static for the last two years (while the sector as a whole has dropped alarmingly), but digital sales have steadily grown. Once you factor in social media and the website, our audience is massive. It may sound like I'm spouting the party line but anyone that knows me knows I'm no bullshitter. We are doing okay at worst and while I can't say why Matchroom do not advertise, large companies like allegedly, Sauerland and RDX do. Whatever Matchroom's reasons, I do not think they are related to our audience size.

Matchroom don't give a shite about the hardcore boxing fan.
More likely to adverties in Nuts magazine, TV Quick or the tabloids to get their TOWIE audience pulled in.

The fact matchroom advertised in this months boxing monthly is strange. I don't know but surely bn has more readers than bm.

We have a lot more, yes. Obviously we have four issues a month to their one but it's still a sizeable difference.
