Styles make fights - we saw twice that Soliman's workrate and awkwardness gave him big problems, not to mention that Soliman seemed to get old overnight against Taylor. That said, it does seem that Sturm is now clearly past his best.

I tried to find footage of Soliman vs Les sherrington to try and work out if Soliman had a chance of stopping Taylor but all I found was an Australian news report that referred to Soliman as the 'World Number One' and 'Former WBF Champion'

"Poor" Hopkins leads one to believe you are talking about someone else or that you actually feel sorry for someone whose continued success has created so many haters.
His time has lasted so much longer than the norm it has reached ridiculous.

"Poor" was probably a poor choice of a word :) My point was that everybody, even aliens, gets into Martinez or Soliman situation unless they retire before their body can't take it. "Poor" may be a right word after the fight you mentioned.

Martinez in particular though always had a style that was going to be affected by father time more so than others because it's so reliant on reflexes and hand and foot speed which obviously declines the older you get. Add chronic knee injuries into the mix and he didnt have much of a chance. Although saying that, I didnt think he looked that slow or that his movement was as bad as some thought it was against. It was more his punch resistance which looked affected more that anything. Even if Hopkins loses this time, no one can say shit. He's proven everyone wrong so many times that we (the public) can't act like our boxing knowledge was verified by his career ending.
The scarier situation is how everyone will feel if does a Kelly Pavlik job to Kovalev. If that happens, it's time for even haters to reorganize some of their p4p and all-time p4p lists.

Shouldn't be any surprise when any random opponent in his prime proves a 50-year-old doesn't belong.

Why? He didn't have high workrate against Taylor, but he certainly did against Sturm. Soliman wouldn't have had as successful career as he has had if it weren't for his excellent conditioning which allows him to throw in high volume.diddy wrote:If I hear about Soliman's workrate again I will puke.
Look at his compubox numbers in major fights:
vs Wright - 1338 punches thrown
vs Sturm I - 954 punches thrown
vs Sturm II - 841 punches thrown
vs Taylor - 431 punches thrown
Clearly this wasn't a 100% Sam Soliman.

Wright and Sturm are slow fighters. Taylor's got pretty good hand speed. Even at his age. Soliman wasn't throwing in the first half of the fight either and was probably down 4-2 even before the knee. He seemed gunshy because of Taylor's superior handspeed and athleticism. Either that or he came to throw the fight and sell an injury to save face. I am leaning toward the former.
Perhaps he was just juiced up for both Sturm fights and left his PED cocktail outside the U.S. for this one?

As far as Hopkins goes. Obviously he's going to the Hall of Fame but if he beats Kovalev at 50 yrs old just put him straight into the Hall before he even retires.
