I'm a bit late flagging this one up but its been bugging me a bit

Last week on the Taylor/Soliman undercard,Carlos Velasquez fought a scheduled 6 rounder against Jean Javier Sotelo

Now for those who didnt see it,Velasquez caught Sotelo with a left uppercut below the belt in the 2nd round,it was low but it didnt look really low enough to stop the fight but who knows how Sotelo felt and TBH its not really my point

My point is Sotelo took the full 5 minutes which he was rightly allowed and he still couldnt continue(IMO he ducked out the fight but thats irrellevant) now the ref ruled the low blow accidental which i agree with and Sotelo may very well have been unable to continue as nobody can tell how he felt

Now Velasquez was declared the winner despite the crucial punch being illegal albeit accidental,surely it should have been a NC??

By that reckoning if fighter A catches fighter B with a good enough shot in the ballz to stop the fight, as long as the ref rules it an accident then fighter A wins with landing an illegal blow

If that is how it works then im surprised more fighters arent trying to severly burst opponents ballsacks on the refs blindside to get the win

I didn't see the fight, but a NC definitely sounds like the correct outcome in that situation. Otherwise, as you say, scoring such a hard low blow that it stops the other guy from continuing becomes a legitimate way to win a fight, which is clearly not the case.

A shot to the balls that is ruled accidental should warrant the (maximum, if needed) 5 mins rest. If he can't continue, tough sh!t, TKO loss.

Otherwise too many guys will take the NC after an accidental shot in the balls, in a fight they are losing.

The responsibility is on the fighter to wear a good cup (I know that won't help too much, but...), and the fighter should entertain the customers even if it means fighting hurt.

I'll be honest i never even thought of fighters using a low blow as a tool to bail out on a fight which is is a legitimate beef because im in no doubt that some fightrs would do that

The fight in question is actually the first time ive seen a boxer quit after the 5 minutes,so its not a common problem but it seemed unfair despite me feeling that Sotelo ducked it

A rule may be written one way such that fighters being hit with low blows can bail out of a fight, and it may be written another way such that fighters doing the hitting can bail out of a fight. Since it's the puncher who controls when a low blow occurs, the rule should be written to favor the guy getting hit.
