Donaire v Walters one to watch

This one has kind of flew under the radar, but could be one of the fights of the year. Donaire looked a P4P fighter before running into Guillermo Rigondeaux losing a lackluster decision, but before that he was taking very good fighters out of it with ease.
Walters is a joy to watch, with power, skills and awkwardness too boot. I really like him and he seems the boxer on the way up. Donaire is only 31 himself but has a few more miles on the clock, but has above average power that could halt a fight at anytime.

Makes for an interesting one, i'm with Walters though. Maybe by stoppage in 10

Yep, I'm quite excited for this one.

I'm fairly sure most people had him top5 P4P before the Rigondeaux defeat. Definitely a fight to look forward to.

Walters smashes Donaire by the 8th, Donaire is not a FW and he's blueprint as to why Rigo is avoided

Looks a terrific card, can't wait. Main event is one to watch, the sensational GG.Golovkin takes on the fearless ( and you need to be ) Mex Rubio, who's a come forward puncher too, so that'll be fun while it lasts.

Then I like Donaire's chances against the young gun Jamaican. Axe man is favourite, but seems he's been down a few times, and I don't think he's ever faced a puncher like the Filipino flash, who i reckon gets the upset tonight...

Betting has Donaire as the favourite, and he is a proven force. But i think he may be on the downside of his career, one punch can change this and Walters is yet to get one of those left hooks landed on him. But at feather will Donaire carry the same punch?

I think Donaire will get the stoppage at some point or win over the distance. I wasnt that impressed with Walters against Darchinyan. He looked clumsy and a bit slow to me. His power is his best asset IMO.

Didnt he knock Darchinyan out in the rematch at featherweight? He also dropped Vetyaka (not sure if ive spelt that right) in his last fight before the cut put an end to that one.

Regarding the possibility of Donaire being knocked out though- has he ever actually touched down in a fight?

It will be interesting to see how Donaire will adapt going into the later rounds up at FW with a genuine strong Featherweight, assuming it goes that far,i think he'll have some tough moments but i still feel even at this weight and the hard fights Nonito has had ,he'll still have enough savvy to win a close decision

It's definietly an interesting fight! Admittedly, I havent really seen enough of Walters to have a truely educated opinion on the fight. Just going on purely what i've seen from both and it was mainly the Darchinyan fight that sticks out with Walters.

Yeh ive only seen Walters 2 or 3 times myself and he was good against Darchinyan last time out but Vic even though still dangerous punch resistence starting to become a real problem at world level and Walters is a solid FW

It was hard to make out Donaire's last fight with Vetyeka because the dodgy ending,i thought Nonito played it smart getting the 4 rounds in knowing he had clearly won, nobody wanted a NC but i thought Donaire could have went on to stop Vetyeka proper

This is an amazing fight card, on paper.

I've lately joined the Golovkin bandwagon after he smashed Geale to bits, I still think if there was someone like say Reggie Johnson about I'd confidently pick the Texan but... There is no-one like Reggie about at middle these days. Golovkin's power & ability to deliver it makes him a mahooosive threat.

Rubio's a big strong hardman, I loved it when he took that unbeaten Canadian puncher into deep water & drowned him, & he cleaned Spada's clock with one shot. He's come a long way since going out in 60 seconds to Jantuah. It also made me laugh when he put on ten pounds after the weigh-in for the Chavez fight & Chavez still outweighed him by a stone when they got in the ring--also the last time XXL Jr has submitted to a check weigh-in, I believe.

Golovkin's stopped me cavilling about him but still gets hit too much for my liking. He'll grind Rubio down like all the other big top middles Rubio has faced have done, but it'll be entertaining & punishing.

EDIT: Rubio couple pounds over the weight, didn't bother to shift the excess (took the fine). Either he's pulling a Salido/Castillo ("Fvck you man I'm not draining myself") or he's too old to get down to the weight properly. If it's the former, he takes a beating & goes the distance (he just isn't big enough compared to GGG--he'd need to be like Chavez big--to pull the Salido thing off). If it's the latter, early fvcking night.

The undercard is a fvcking ace fight too. Donaire's speed & power means unless you're like a A-class cutie, a world-class counter-puncher, or a physical marvel, he's eventually just gonna catch you & gonna flatten you. That simple. Still got images in my head of him doing Montiel at bantam (in a fifty-fifty unification fight, no less) with basically one shot. Amazing natural gifts but they mask great big holes in proper technique.

The Jamaican kiddie I've only seen twice, versus Darchinyan & Breidis' younger brother, & he beat the ever-living shit outta both of them. A big strong natural feather with at least decent fundamentals & excellent speed & power. From purely a speculative fannish point of view it is a helluva fight, & I think can't fail to be exciting viewing, & really, what else d'you want? Two fast hard punchers who are only really effective whilst attacking fighting? "Oh no thanks, not really interested..."

Right.

The matchmaking on Donaire's part--all just to get a fvcking featherweight belt outright--is fvcking ridiculously hard-core & a lump of corroded phlegmy lung tissue in the eye of those who defend the timorous bullshit we put up with over here from our "world class" fighters.

Staying up all night, I reckon.

Looking at his stats Walters must be one of the guys in boxing with the longest reach in proportion to his height.

I had a close look at Walters record on boxrec and he's been down twice in his career apparantly. Obviously we dont know the nature of the knockdowns and it's a bit of a stretch but could it indicate somewhat punch resistance issues? One was against a 13-0 guy at the time in Carlos Manuel Reyes and the other was against a 5-3 guy at the time. Could Walters be one of those big hitters who has suspect whiskers? I guess we'll see tonight.

He seemed alot heavier than Darchinyan, i think he'll have a similar size advantage over Donaire, who i rate higher as a boxer, finely balanced fight imo, bookies have Walters favourite.

It was good while it lasted, with both guys being hurt but Walters ultimately powering through and busting up Donaire. Arum talked of matching the winner with Loma, another fighter he promotes, but I think the latter could use some more experience before taking on Walters. He still seems to struggle with pressure and looks a bit uncomfortable in the pro ring when he's pressured, and I think that would be a significant problem against Walters. Perhaps a bout with Gradovich, who is a very active fighter but lacks firepower, would be good preparation.

Hell of a shoot-out, I was on the edge of my seat through-out. Nonito's regression into a "I'm gonna square up & launch my left hook no matter what, 'cos, hey, it's flattened like twenty other guys" -fighter is complete. The way the two of them stood there loading up on each other... Fvck me.

When Donaire went down early (mis-called a slip by the ref) I thought "Fvck me that was quick"; when Walters was hurt at the bell for the second I thought "Now we've got a fight!" & also "Keep that right hand up mon!" & I laughed slightly when he went to the wrong corner & I think one of the Russian commentators swore. Then came the knockdown of Donaire the next round & the continued stalking until the boom lowered.

Fvcking ace fight. Walters has speed & power for days & like I said, at least decent fundamentals; his team had the tactics down spot-on, whenever there was a possibility of Donaire's left hook coming through his right hand only left his cheekbone like twice.

Donaire looks like he could do so much more with those gifts but who knows how much he's got left? Enough to actually stick to some boxing rather than putting all his wossname on taking your head off with every single punch?

Mint finish by Walters, too. New dangerman. Walters vs my boy Jhonny G. would be lanky vulnerable bomber quick-draw heaven, I reckon.

NW:

PS: Did anyone else think Donaire looked... Weird physically? Big, but bloat-y? You could see spare flesh on the back, underneath his ribs, which seems weird for a FW. Maybe his hyperbaric chamber's sprung a leak lately...

Also, Rubio looked old & fat but fvck me the message is clear: STANDING IN FRONT OF GENNADY GOLOVKIN IS VERY BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH.

Rubio was just there for the payday, he could of got up in time but didn't. GGG needs to be matched tougher, but they have to pay the money to get people to face him.

Walters v Donaire was a good fight, first 3 rounds looked like it could build into a FoTY one, but once Walters knocked Donaire down it changed the fight and ultimately the younger stronger fighter came through. Walters has a great jab really busted up Donaire with it, although he knocked him out with a right hand Walters looks like he could do with some work on that part of his game.

I watched it through download, and the HBO commentary team are excellent. RJJ really comes across well on it, giving excellent insight into the mindset of a boxer.

^ Yeah, once Nonito started getting out-jabbed he just went to pieces, really, it was one Hail-Mary loaded up bomb after another... Was still on tenterhooks though, with bombs flying about the place so violently it looked like a mini-Julian Jackson vs Gerald McLellan I there, thought either one of them was gonna get splattered at any second!
