Am I the only one REALLY doubting this has actually been made? Suspect that Otake "pulls out" and we end up with Quigg Vs Bantamweight...

Much better opponent than galahad.....said hearn, Gallagher and quigg and no one else. Well done boy's you have really looked after the fans this time! Hearn has single handedly save the ppv by pulling this out his arse!

Slag Quigg off for the late replacement opponents like Munyai and Jamoye. This guy is an absolutely fine opponent if it is indeed the guy for the job. Wake would have been the best realistic available guy (they have openly said they don't want Rigo just yet, Santa Cruz aint coming over here, Martinez won't fight so soon after the Frampton defeat and Frampton and Avalos are tied up.) This guy is only just below Wake in both independent computerised rankings (boxrec 8 and IBO 5.)
In other threads we've been frustrated that opponents have been stepping up in weight. Not the case here.
In other threads we've been frustrated that guys below Galahad in the ratings are being favoured. Not the case here.
In other threads we've been dissecting ridiculous holes in guys records ('I don't like Wake, he's lost 4 times etc etc' among other champion posts.) This guy has just the one loss early in his career and has wins over someone rated above Galahad in the rankings.
It's a step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned, and I'v been smashing my head against a brick wall with Quigg's career too.
I just hope that after this fight, should he win, we don't immediately have a fight scheduled for 10 weeks time. It almost always immediately rules out all the top guys when this happens. I wanna see them just say ok, we sit and wait for one of the names I mentioned before to become available and make one of those fights.

It is a little bit like Hatton's WBU reign. Just think when the true step up comes he won't be prepared.
This is an average opponent.

I'm happy with this guy as an opponent, certainly better than most (if not all) his previous opponents, wouldn't say it's got me frothing at the cock with excitement but compared to another blown up bantam this is good.

Are the IBO and boxrec rankings not the same, aside from the IBO removing the champions?
RE Otake, he's a made to order opponent. Lacks power, lack's movement, walks in pretty straight lines, has been lucky in a number of his domestic title defenses, has never been in a scheduled 12 rounder, coming in on the back of a rib injury (I think a double rib break but not certain).
As someone who follows the Japanese scene possibly more than I follow the British scene, I will personally say this is an awful fight if it's actually made. The only article I could find in Japanese about it links to the boxing scene piece, Kaneko Boxing and Otake haven't managed it which seems strange.
Wake would have been a better opponent and I'm not convinced, at all, by his apparently injury considering he was talking about going jogging the DAY AFTER the story about his ankle injury broke.

I just don't understand why this guy is picked instead of galahad. The only reason it can be is they think galahad beats quigg otherwise you don't choose some guy from the otherside of the world that 99% of fans have not heard of......beating this guy with gain quigg zero credit because no one has seen him fight or heard of him

Cheap and comes on the back of an injury...that I suspect will be "re-injured" in the coming weeks to open up an opportunity for a plucky Bantamweight...

Just re rankings yeah boxrec and IBO are different, using presumably different formulas. Tyson Fury is rated 3 with the IBO but 13 with boxrec, for example.

Scott Quigg turning into the fighter, that people are starting to not care about anymore.

Cheers. I know the guy from the IWBR comes on slates all the other "independent rankings" and claimed they used to do the IBO ones until recently.

Dunno, judging from the turn-outs people do care about him.
It's just that with promoters so desperate to protect the zero certain fighters never get let off the leash properly. They keep treading water in low-risk bouts, while their brains-trust make cuntingly stupid, deeply dishonest public statements like
this in newspapers:
I think the only way a fight can happen between Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton is if Carl leaves Barry McGuigan.
I don’t think it can happen otherwise.
This is the sort of behaviour which generates ill-will on the part of anyone with more than two brain cells or a cursory interest in people hitting each other for money.
Yet still, they act this way! Then, if said fighter were to come a cropper versus the low-risk/outweighed fighters they feed him, certain parts of the trade will then feign exasperation at people:
"Oh, you public, you're so fickle! You've been moaning about him hiding away from decent fights for ages & now he's lost you're crowing you ghastly peons!" etc, when all it is is a bit of schadenfreude at seeing some smug unaccountable (even to the poor saps that pay their wages) lying tosspots end up with egg on their faces.
But in a weird way, I feel sorry for Quigg. I mean, not
really. I felt sorrier for Jamoye, fer instance. But still. My ire is directed mostly at the vested interests who are quite happy either lying or misrepresenting the situation, rather than with the fighter himself.

Tried to find some footage of Otake for those wondering what he was about but full fights were scarce to come by. This was about it:

I might sound silly here but I actually thought looking at that video that up until the stoppage, Maruyama actually looked the more talented of the two! He was faster, looked more fluid, etc. Otake looks completely static. Very easy to land on and so on. Doesnt look good at all. Just shows how the boxrec ratings can be manipulated.

Has there ever been any talk of Otake and Wake facing one another? Also I was just looking at Otake's record and saw that he lost to a guy called koguchi who was 6-0 and that he retired in 2008 undefeated. Any idea what happened to Koguchi?

I've not seen any talk about it though it's a fight that was on my "christmas list" at the end of last year, would have enjoyed that unification bout.
As for Koguchi I'm not sure what's happened to him...though strangely Wake fights for Koguchi gym and Manabu Koguchi does get a mention in an old Shingo Wake blog entry regarding the death of someone, I assume Manabu's uncle and the brother of Koguchi gym chairman Satoshi Koguchi (oddly ANOTHER super Bantamweight).
Manabu won the All-Japan Rookie of the Year tournament with his win after beating Otake.

So they hold rookie of the year tournaments every year at every weight? What are the criterion to qualify and how many competitors are there?

They hold them at every weight between 105 and 160 EXCEPT for 154 (I've got to admit I'm not sure what Light Middleweight did to offend folks).
In terms of criteria to qualify you've got to be a Rookie with a C license (so no being an amateur stand out here folks) and generally have had less than 5 wins prior to the tournament beginning. As for competitors I don't think there is a hard limit due to the variance in divisions with Middleweight having far fewer than say Bantamweight or Lightweight.
The way it's structured is in area's, i.e. East Japan, West Japan and Central Japan.
Generally you compete in a preliminary bout (or 2) a regional semi final, a regional final and then the All Japan final. This years East Japan finals are on November 2nd (
http://boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=701344) if you want to give that a look over whilst the West Japan and Central Japan finalists battle on November 9th (
http://boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=701346) with the winners to battle in December to be crowned the All-Japan Rookie of the Year.
A great idea and something that I'd love to see happen in other countries.

That does sound like a good idea, if it means prospects being in competitive fights that's always a good thing.
We definitely need more of that in this country.
