Apparently they came to terms about a month ago and signed contracts sometime before GGG fought Rubio.

Part of me is happy for Martin, definately deserves his shot again and will, IMHO give GGG his toughest test yet and last longer than most in there.

Put part of me would like to see Martin get any easier title shot and a chance to get a title.
He's been given 3 next to impossible tasks with travelling to Germany and Argentina and now facing Golovkin.

A trinket fight? No thanks. If Murray beats Golovkin he'll be the middleweight champion of the world. At the moment, no other win would give him that honour.

Beating Cotto would.

Because Cotto beat the man who many thought was "the man" in the division. My thoughts are that Golovkin is the best at 160 by a country mile and so he's "the man". Some scribes will disagree.

Ring, Linear & WBC titles. Golovkin might be better, but Cotto has a legitimate claim to being the middleweight No. 1.

Golovkin still only has two world level wins, his hype is too much based on what he has done as a pro. If Murray beats him then people may well say he wasn't as good as people thought and Murray's not really the real middleweight champion.

There's a fair point. However, if he beat Golovkin, i think he'd have a great chance of securing a fight with Cotto. However I cant see him getting past Golovkin anyway so I guess it wont matter.

If Murray beats Cotto, he'll have beaten a much smaller man whose only worthwhile appearance in the division was to give a pasting to a decrepit geriatric.

I'd say Murray loses to both Cotto and GGG. Golovkin would destroy him.

The fact that Cotto won't go anywhere near Golovkin suggests that GGG is the legitimate no. 1 middleweight & Cotto knows it.

I think the size factor plays a big part aswell. I dont think Cotto really had much intention of going up to middleweight but wanted to win world titles in 4 different weight divisions and he saw Martinez as being a smaller middleweight (like Golovkin) but he also saw a middleweight that is finished basically and was relatively easy pickings. I'd rather see Cotto fight Canelo myself. I think that's a more even matchup and a more intriguing one to me. I think he'd get destroyed by GGG.

Yeah don't get me wrong, I think Cotto is far too small for GGG & is right not to fight him. I don't blame Cotto at all for taking advantage of Martinez & picking up his title, but any talk of Cotto being the legitimate no. 1 middleweight is crazy imo.

Not to me, mate. You know how you have 'Horse Rules' that some people can't get their heads around? Well I have my rules too. Essentially, I decide who I think is the genuine best in a particular division, anoint them as the true world champion and that's that.

Does beating your champion make someone the champion or can you just hand it to someone else?

its hardly a rule born of idiosyncratic whimsy to say beating ggg would give someone the right to call themselves the middleweight champ

Doesnt really matter whether beating GGG makes Murray the true champion or not......he isnt beating him...not even with a baseball bat.

Murray would kill Golovkin with a baseball bat.

Murray has enough visa issues as it is without adding murder to his rap sheet.

If you beat my champion you become my champion but you must defend your title against worthy opponents, if any exist, within an arbitrary (in the autocratic sense) time-frame of my choosing or you risk being stripped of my title and it being awarded to somebody I decide is better than you.
